we're waiting for the PS4
fishtailrook1 (?)
if there's anybody NOT on a current (6th?) gen console exclusivly, I need some suggestions, here.

I needed a dose of Mario, and went and bought a reconned Gamecube. the whole thing has impressed me (including a major improvement over its immediate predecessor's controller), so I'm gonna expand my retro library.

what I need is suggestions for the better games for the console NOT related to mario.

in the pipeline allready is RE0 and (laugh now) Luigi's Mansion (?). any suggestions would be appreciated.
after one week, if there's no more than 5 replies, I will cease and desist on this thread.

Resident Evil 4 is the only game i've seen on the Gamecube and was extremely impressive from what i saw 👍

I think Luigi's Mansion is fun. The graphics were impressive for a GC launch title. I'd also recommend TimeSplitters 2, if you're into FPS. I"m not into RE, but a friend who is says all the RE's are good. Metroid Prime & Prime 2: Echoes are great. If you're into Zelda, Wind Waker is worth it. It took me awhile to get over Zelda being cell shaded, but it's one the best in the series IMO. Ikaruga is hard to find but I was really impressed with it the first time I saw and it's really addicting. I know you said no Mario, but I'll throw out Paper Mario, Smash Bros, & Mario Kart anyways.

Overall I think the GC was one of the most underrated systems ever. It has a great library of games and most of them can found pretty cheap anymore. I'd also recommend finding some wavebirds. They're much better than the 3rd party wireless controllers but since they work on the Wii, the prices have stayed kinda high. I've managed to find a few still for $15-20 though. You could also get a gameboy player and play Gameboy advance, color, and original gameboy games. There's a lot of good titles there too.

o.O
damn, I forgot I can get a metroid or a Zelda (still have the originals for Zeld &Metroid)
tho swapping the Mets to FPS kinda puts me off.

i shoulda said...i have the PS conversion of RE4. I'm still working on it.

I can buy a GB directly. when I bought the cube, they had a 15 to 20 year old ORIGINAL gameboy...AND a Snes gameboy converter!

however, they don't seem to stock peripherals...only stock controllers.

I still have all the originals too and the Super Gameboy. I love my retro consoles! Hell, I still bust out the 2600 from time to time.

As far as Metorid going FPS, I was put off by the idea too but when I finally bit the bullet and tried it, I eventually got hooked. It plays a lot more like an adventure game and not a true FPS. Granted, I still think Super Metroid is the best, but if you're a fan, they're definetely worth it. FWIW, fusion on the GBA plays a lot like Super Metroid and I highly recommend it as well.

I guess I'm lucky because there are a couple different second hand shops around here and they have a decent collection of retro games and accesories. I find that the record stores who sell games usually have a better selection of older stuff than the video game stores like gamestop, etc. Half.com has some good deals.

I don't use online services to shop
1. I'm old fashioned
2. I have no credit card
3. it's a good way to get your identity stolen (hackers are a LOT smarter than you think)

I'll be heading to EB/Gamestop for Gamecubers...what's left of them. as the new consoles come out, the older games are discontinued almost everywhere, and you have to rely on beat up trade-ins or private sales (which are often ready to snap in half from being played with by little kids). and the guys that sell systems privately (at least around here) want their ENTIRE investment back. a lot of guys want retail price when-new..as they're usually looking for cash to pay a bill up.

Fair enough. I've done some work in IT security and it's a scary world, but I've been shopping online forever. Granted I'll only use secure sites and I won't use a wireless connection if there's sensitive info. Anyway, I prefer to by locally as well but I'd rather buy from my local record stores then EB/Gamestop, etc. They typically have the highest prices and I can't stand their employees. I guess I'm lucky that the shops here have some high quality stuff. It's not hard for me to find NES games in like new condition for cheap.

Is a Wii a 6th Gen console?

With a Wii you can get most retro games all the way back to NES.

Luigi's Mansion is neat, I wish I still had it. Metroid Prime is excellent, don't hesitate because of the FPS thing. :) Metroid Prime 2: Echoes sucks -- too much illogical backtracking, enemies are too time-consuming to take care of (but not challenging)...it has some interesting gameplay elements, but it's just too annoying to slog through, IMO.

If you like Metal Gear, you should get Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes. If you've never played Metal Gear, you should get Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes. :sly:

Wolfe: just bought the MGS essential collection, so I have all three. I'm in love with stealthers, and have been a snake head since trying to beat MGS2. I got "panther" rank in MGS3

DQuaN: still have all my old consoles, including a still working NES and Game Genie. you can pick up NES carts for free...people throw away 2nd gen consoles.

Rumple: forgot to read the previous post? I snapped up RE4 the second I found the sony-version. still working on it.

Ceiling fan: had Soul Caliber II for over a year. the PS version has Heiachi as a guest star :P just picked up 3, as well. (I made the Wicked Witch. she kicks ass huhuhuhuhuhuhuhuhuh ( phantom rep if you get the refrence :P) )

so far, Metroid Prime has a universal vote.

here's how i think the console generations go.

'80 Atari/Coleco/Tubographix 16
'85 NES/Genesis (US)
'90 Snes/Sega CD?
'95 PS/N64/Saturn?
'00 PS2/GC/XBOX
'05 PS3/Wii/Xbox 360

speculated for '10 is PS4/Xbox 720 ...by the time the PS4 comes out, THEN i can afford a PS3...which costs more than this computer I'm using.
I'm not sure where to stick saturn and Dreamcast, but I think it was a "TFA" (too far ahead)

@Suede53 and DQuaN: :lol:

Doesn't that pack have the original Playstation version of MGS1? The Gamecube game I'm talking about is MGS1 "remastered" using the MGS2 engine.

Suede. thanks for clearing that up. I'm not positive about console generations, even being a video game Graybeard (i have a PONG home unit floating around somewhere)

Wolfe. yes. the way my "paper Mario" is coming out, I'm seriously considering checking full 3D render games to see if they're as impressive as these glass smooth 2d's. also, the GC version may be easier than the PSX version. I can't get to the elevator in the opener without being killed.

I believe I've got you beat on that, I've been a "Snake-Head" since first playing MGS1 on the original PS when I was 7... And beating it...

@Suede53 and DQuaN: :lol:

From what I read on Wikipedia The Twin Snakes has *minimal changes to the story with the exception of about 3 words in the dialog being removed or pronounced properly. I want to try the remastered version but I'm sure the original will always give me more pleasure.

*In the original MGS1, Grey Fox pronounces 'respite' wrong. (pronounces it as it's spelled) In the remastered version it's pronounced correctly. (res-pit)

I watched the digitally remastered cut-scenes on YouTube.

Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes (remake of MGS1 with added FPS POV on demand).
Soul Calibur 2 (Link from Zelda is cool but Taki with the GC controller is sweet).
Rouge Squadron (any of them, I understand all are good and the one I played was great).

Resident Evil 4...
Absolutely my favorite game of the PS2, Xbox, GC generation.

The graphics, sounds, and game-play are without flaw. The fun is incredible (if you love exploding zombie-like beings) and the replay value is great for both the short term and the long term (thanks to many extra challenges, unlockables, and the amazing Mercenaries mini-game).

I highly recommend RE4.

Some of the others mentioned here...
Metroid is lacking a traditional FPS dual joystick control setting so I wouldn't suggest that as the FPS to buy. Rather, I'd got with a good third party game (something like Black if it is on the GC, I've only got a "Call of Duty" game).

All that aside, I've enjoyed most of the games I've played on the GC and always keep an eye out for rare finds.

well, a mod that doesn't bother to check previous posts!

so far, metroid Prime is...well, a tough joke. I hit the same barrier as in MGS...stuck at the first area, and getting my butt kicked before I can figure out the how of the controlls. that's bloody annoying.

I'm having trouble with the automatic Analog/Dpad swap with the GC controller, and it takes the fun out of a fighter i DID pick up. I learned everything on a D pad, so it's throwing me off

it's rare when I whip through a game this fast. Paper Mario TTYD is near completion...I might rack up 40 some hours worth of playtime (and I thought Super Mario RPG was a piece of cake!). I'm trying level-uping, but it's hard to find a spot where you get more than one star point for your efforts :P

any other recomended pieces, people? I intend to run in today for a couple quickies.

okay, if anybody reads this...

Thursday, i turned in a huge supply of recovered nes carts and peripherals to a local exchange store (forty carts). i had three rarities (for the shop) in the pile SMB2-US, the ORIGINAL zelda gold tone(with sleeve, no less); and a rather hard to find copy of Mike Tyson's Punch Out! !! I walked away with 75 bucks in store credit (and still have forty plus)

my game cube tack on was REmake (sorry, guys, Metroid Prime went into the sale bin...someone had been rather abusive with it!). so far, so good. this one isn't as hard as I was lead to believe. the new rooms and such are a nice touch, as are all the candles. even the Crimson Heads don't seem to be too bad. of course, I haven't let Lisa out, yet, so we'll see.

Go get an N64. Now. And buy the original Super Mario 64, Super Smash Bros., and California Speed. I miss them.. and I never even owned my own N64 :(

I guess N64s are pretty cheap now, but really, I wasn't too satisfied with mine, even with the few games that were really good. You know, SM64 and SSB work well on emulators, so you could just try that if you miss them. Sorry, I can't provide links or anything, GTPlanet doesn't allow links to illegal materials. :)

someone woke this up?!

I've had and played a 64. my fave on there was Cruisin' USA (and it's sequel?). the cart format was fine, but the CONTROLLER...

tack-ons
SSBMeelee (this is gonna drive me nuts, but i LURVE the thing)
GC conversion of orcana of time (it has goodies tacked on)
problem is, I can use LoZ:embarrassed:ot unless I wipe most of my mem card! (means I need a new one)
