I've been having constant problems with GT5 since the last few updates.

It has gotten to the point where I cannot play online for more than 5 minutes in any given room without being disconnected from the room or the lobby. Doesn't matter if I'm connected to my home network wired or wireless, I've tried bypassing my router completely but I still have constant disconnects.

I've also been having a lot of random crashes and extremely long load times lately too.

These are the first issues I've had with the game since release. The install of GT5 on my PS3 is from release, so it has had every single patch applied to it.

Are you having this problem in the recommended rooms, too? Have you cleared your internet cache and reset your modem before login?

Tried clearing the cache, no affect. Trying the recommended room now.

Is your hard drive nearly full?
I ask because sometimes that can cause problems... though not sure if it would cause disconnects.

Though our ps3 is not anywhere near full. We have a direct wired connection to the internet. And since the recent updates, I notice longer load times, and definitely more hangs & disconnects.
It's not constant, not all the time. But we never had problems at all like that before. It's just a lot less rare than it used to be for us.

So sounds to me like it's a combination of the network being a bit more dodgy lately, and something that's not quite right on your end.

Other possibilities to check:

Do you use a mic? Can there be a problem with that? (I don't have one myself, but I have heard of reports that some people have had problems related to them.)

Have you checked your internet speed from another device - like your computer?
Usually if you report having a problem, your Internet Provider should be able to test your internet connection, and be able to diagnose it if the problem is between them and the modem.

This might seem like a no-brainer, but just in case: Make sure the ps3 is clean & free of dust. Check the plugs & where you plug the wires in & such.

The outlet & wires for your internet. Is anything tarnished or corroded or too old?
For example, if you have DSL coming out of a phone line - the phone jack eventually will get old & corroded, and cause connection interference. Look closely at your DSL outlet jack, or cable jack, and the wires between everything. Is there anything that doesn't look right, any pinched or unusually bent wires?

The modem - is it still in good working condition? All the wires in good shape?

That's all the things I can think of that you didn't mention already trying.

Other than the hopefully obvious... is anyone heavily using the same internet connection while you're trying to race? That could be a biggie.

The hard disk has about 50gb available.

The are no problems with my network.

I do not have a mic.

My internet bandwidth is 8mbit down, 1mbit up. I can confirm this speed from every device both wired and wireless on my network.

Like I said before, this really started to become an issue around the 2.03 patch.

Well, I've listed pretty much everything I could think of... But like I said, we too have had troubles we never had before too. So I definitely think there's something hinky with the game server.
But it's not constant or regularly. There are times I've raced during high traffic times (weekend) where there's been no problem at all.

Not to harp on it, but a big thing would be other people on the same internet connection using it while you're trying to race. It shouldn't be a problem if they're just web surfing, of course. But if they're doing big downloads or watching streaming stuff, or gaming themselves, then I could see maybe it would interfere.

The only other thing I can think to advise is stay out of full lobbies.
I've been hearing over & over again that rooms with more than 12 cars seem to have lots of problems recently.

But just an fyi: Connection speed isn't really a big issue with the game. You really don't need a fast connection speed to play gt5 or have a reliable connection to the game server. What you do need is a decent connection that's not being interfered or interrupted.

The problem isn't with my internet connection or home network, it's the game itself.

It doesn't matter if I choose a room with only a few players or close to the maximum, mic or no mic, recommended or non-recommended. I can't stay in a room for more than 5-10 minutes without being disconnected.

Can anybody tell me the proper way of deleting and re-installing GT5 without losing my saved game or DLC?

This happened to me and my hard drive was messed up. Reinstalling didn't work and neither did reformatting. I'm assuming there were bad sectors on the drive. It was only two months old. I got a new 500gb drive and it's been great ever since. I would try deleting the game data from the "game data" folder(NOT your game save. That's in the "PS3 saved data" folder) and trying a reinstall if it's getting really bad.
Don't forget that you will have to export your photos and replays from in game before you delete the install if you want to keep them.

I did a quick search and couldn't find the thread where I saw instructions to re-install gt5. I would suggest editing the title of the thread as that question perhaps.

And sorry, I may have misunderstood. Many time when people say they have "constant" problems - they don't mean constant, every single time. But if that's the case, that you can't play at all, then yes, there is a more serious problem going on. (Though what it is, I'm sorry I don't know.)

I'm attempting to do the re-install today, I'll update again when I have some results to see that worked or not.

2 hours and 3.3gb's worth of updates later and it's still booting me out of online room constantly...

**** this game. What a piece of ****.

Just as mysteriously as the problems appeared, they appear to have disappeared. I played for hours for 2 days in a row and haven't had any errors or disconnects.

I have no idea what it was, but I'm just happy I can play online again.

Ahh the mysteries of GT5. On Punch's advice a few months ago, I went to a CAT6 direct cable connection for the PS3 and for several months after that I had near perfect connectivity and I was playing quite a bit. Since the last update or two, it seems to be back to the way it was last spring, freezing up trying to enter lobbies, freezing up in the garage, tracks not loading for the entire group...etc. The last couple of patches have definitely had an effect on gameplay unrelated to anything we are doing on our end.

Sounds like your problem is resolved OP so that's a good thing!👍

Wow someone took my advice! ;)

Yeah, I've always used a cat6 cable. And NEVER had problems last year. Or if once in a great while, it was RARE.
These days, yes, we've had MULTIPLE problems at times getting disconnected & freezes & crap like that. :ouch:
That said, there are times I have NO PROBLEMS AT ALL.
So definitely think something's hinky with the recent updates.
Hopefully it will be fixed!
It's definitely a mystery. :boggled:

Yes, a Cat6 network cable is for sure a good start. :sly:👍

@OP: take a look here & try out these tips: Get the BEST performance online (DMZ) Sticky this!

If it doesn't fix the problems, then maybe your provider have to check your internet connection (yes, sometimes it isn't perfect configured). But I bet it's just the bugged online mode of GT5. :)

I ruled out EVERYTHING when I was trying to find out the problem...

  • Changing from wireless to wired connection
  • Different ethernet cables
  • Putting the PS3 IP on the DMZ
  • Using a different router
  • Plugging the PS3 directly into my cable modem
  • Reinstalling the game

...nothing worked. I know my ISP wasn't experiencing any problems because non of my VPN connections went down, and I checked the logs of a monitoring system I run at work to keep an eye on my home network and the logs were clean.

Just as mysteriously that the problem showed up, it disappeared. I've been playing all week without a problem again.

Yeah, in a case like that... it's a mystery.
Could have been anything... You may never know.
Fortunately it cleared up! So that's something. 👍

I'm just glad I can play online again. Now I don't hate life as much.
