Constant wireless connection problems on PS3

Hi guys, I have a PS3 and a BT home-hub wireless router which sits about 8 metres away, with just a single door between them (otherwise direct line of sight). The house has several other computers (2 mac and 1 pc) which all connect and receive wireless completely problem-free.

My PS3, however, has constant connection problems. "A connection could not be established", "You have been disconnected from the network" etc.. I have noticed there is much better chance of connection if the system has been switched off for a long time.

Once I have received an error, it will not connect again without restarting it. Then usually, I can get onto PSN, but by the time I get into GT5, I get very long freezes as I try to enter GT-mode online, and I eventually get signed out.

I have searched the net and found only the most general answers. I have tried resetting the router and my system, and the problem persists.
Wondering if anyone has solved a problem like this with any particular fix? I don't want to get an ethernet cable, if at all possible.

We'll start off with general questions and then go from there.

How "tech savvy" are you? If I ask questions like:

  • What is your NAT at on the PS3?
  • Does your PS3 have a static IP or does your router assign it's IP?
do you know where to find that out or would you like a bit more in the way of instructions? Just so we're both on the same page. There's no point in me going into über detail if I don't need to. :)

What are your connection download and upload speeds on the PS3 test page? And how different are they from what your computer gets? My PS3 went wrong wirelessly recently, I use a 10m Ethernet cable now.

This is common problem with ps3's and wireless routers but has a simple solution. Go into your settings and instead of selecting automatic wireless setup choose manual. When it gets to primary and secondary DNS enter these numbers and it will fix the problem. all other settings leave at standard set. Primary DNS 208.67.222.222 and Secondary DNS 208.67.220.220 Everyone else i've helped with this no longer has the problem. Good luck

I didn't have your exact issue but this may help. It has worked on 3 PS3s so far on my router which constantly kept disconnecting me every 5-15 minutes or so.

Disable Media Server Connection in the Network Settings.

Other than that, it does sound like an IP issue of some kind. Follow the other guy's instructions above they probably know more about it than I do. :P

My PS3 does this, mainly due to a low signal strength. Just moving the PS3 around by an inch helps tremendously. Mine jumps from 17% to 55%

Thanks for all your help and suggestions fellas. Sorry I've just been too busy to even think about this so far.. Going to try raygena's fix first, then if that doesn't work, I'll come back and maybe you can attempt to teach me what those things mean, TB  Thanks again, will report back here in a minute..

Looks like I owe at least 1 of you a beer. (or an apple juice) xD

..Maybe not. It did connect but now I have the usual lock-ups in GT5. If I'm lucky the PSN will kick me off within 5 or 10 mins and I can at least play. Perhaps I'll need you, after all TB :D I'll run connection test tomorrow also... I tried just now but after some time exchanging key information with the router, it fails to get IP address.
