For those here who think 2003 has been controversial, I draw your attention to the 1994 season, whixh saw two drivers killed, two injured to the point that they never competed in F1 successfully again, bizarre rule changes, freaky penalties, and in the end, a collision to decide the championship that in hindsight may have been deliberate....

enjoy....

Looking back on it, it's surprising that there weren't more deaths. And in 1995 as well, when the Schumacher-Hill rivalry was getting really silly.

But it's that season that's responsible for all the really dull tracks we have now. I mean, Zeltweg? Come on!

And whenever I see new circuit designs, they all make the same mistake: Fast corner -> long straight -> slow corner. When will they learn that they need slow corner -> long straight -> slow corner? Like in Malaysia. Or you need to get really silly with the straight like at Indy.

I think it takes quite a set of huevos to keep it floored through the straight at Indy :trouble: ..

Not sure I agree with that. F1 cars are carrying so much downforce for the infield that there's no real movement of the car through that corner.

130R at Suzuka however... Cojones grandes required there I think.

On second thought I have to agree with you (bet you didn't see that one coming :) )

I must've done 130R a million times + in MotoGP, and that is one hard corner to get right but the times you do get it right.. Ohh boy..

I'm inclined to agree - and the side impact regulations, much as I think they make the cars ugly, have probably saved some significant injuries . Verstappen at Spa some years ago being a prime example. I did love seeing the drivers' shoulders exposed, but it was dangerous - the bizarre thing is it wouldn't have saved the lives of Senna or Ratzenberger at Imola in '94...

Ugh. That was hard to watch. A chicane...smack-dab in Eau Rouge.

Of course, we have No Spa this year...

Oh yeah - and that bizarre tyre wall at Spain or Portugal!

That "tire wall" chicane at Catalunya looked out of place for even a club-racing meeting.

However, when I saw that circuit in real-life in '98, the by-pass road created around that fast-ess probably is for the better. There really wasn't much run-off (maybe 2 car-lengths) for that right-hander.

And that stupid 1st-gear hairpin/chicane at Estoril. Just feckin' annoying.

Would you say 130R is scarier than the Laguna Seca corkscrew, or the left hander after the corkscrew for that matter?

I'm not familiar with Suzuka but if so, I'd have to check it out!

Yes, I would say that 130R is scarier than both those corners, although I know that they've changed the layout a little since last year. The new layout is quicker, which may mean it's flat in race trim, which could be a disappointment.

I don't think that the Corkscrew is scary, it's just that there's a massive drop off right on the apex of the corner. And whilst the one following it is quite scary due to the slope, it's not that "Can I? Can't I?" feeling you get around 130R.

The 130R isn't marked on this course, but it's the next corner to the left of "Overpass". If you follow the circuit clockwise, starting naturally with the pit straight, and then the First Curve, you eventually wind your way back to that kink just after the road passes over the other section of track.

The 130R is virtually flat-out, much like Eau Rouge at Spa.

i saw the senna crash live back in 94. didnt they say that he survived the impact but suffered major injuries when the wheel that had come off his car smacked him in the head?

No - he copped a penetrating brain injury from part of the suspension arm that broke off with the wheel - went in a bit above his right eye.
