Convince me on a wheel...

Ok, So I'm loving GT5:P with the Sixaxis but I see lots of people using the DFP and G25, I'm a bit dubious on the whole wheel thing as I bought 360 wheel for Forza 2 and all it did was make the game MUCH harder and my laptimes went up by about 5 seconds...

Now I have faith in Gran Turismo, but I will only buy a wheel if its possible to still be competetive with one without being a GT god :crazy:

So are eople getting faster times with wheels than pads, and also when on Sixaxis you can only turn in about 200 degrees, if I had a wheel would I be able to get more lock when cornering?

I.e on daytona or even stood still holding the stick furthest left only makes the guys hands go a quarter turn left not lock to lock...

I want to say this first, PRACTICE!
It takes time to get used to the wheel and get better lap times.

I have better lap times with Dualshock 3 because I haven't spent enough time with my Logitech G25 (I have no place to set it up).

If you have place to set it up, buy one.
If you enjoy racing games, buy one.

man,this is a driving simulator,not a racegame....get a wheel and feel really really sorry that you diddnt buy it sooner....!

Actually, if I were you, I would wait for the "Official Gran Turismo 5 Wheel". Who knows, it might be better than Logitech G25.
 
The wheel allows for percise inputs, as opposed to the sixaxis that only has mm's of play. This will allow you to be smoother and more consistant.
And no, the guy in the car only turns 200* no matter what.
Yes, you could get more lock when cornering, but you only need to turn far enough to grip the corner. Any more than needed and you will understeer.
But this allows you to modulate the throttle and brake at the same time unlike with the sixaxis.
If you get the G25, you also have a clutch and H gated shifter to use also.
 
just like a HD TV.. without a proper sound system its only half the quality..

same goes with Gran Turismo...
without the wheel (g25) its half as fun
trust me just practice..
and it better money then that crappy microsoft wheel that you got for forza


but i think just wait few months.. the Gran Turismo wheel might be better and improved over G25 :)

TopGearFan08... as was already stated by the others get the wheel and practice not only will your game experience be better but you will find your lap times will improve fairly quickly
 
I've been playing GT on and off for about 5 years (since GT3). After seeing so many posts lately about steering wheels, I decided to pull the trigger on a DFP off eBay, which cost $52 plus $17 for shipping. It arrived last Thursday and I am so glad I got it. It absolutely makes the game way more fun. It took about a day or so to get used to it. I didn't do any hard comparisons on lap times, and frankly I don't even care if I'm faster or not. Turning feels way more accurate. Throttle and brake feel way more accurate and I like using the shifter, even though it isn't gated. Oh and that force feedback is very cool. Lastly, you can look left and right while using the wheel.

About the only downside to the wheel is the look I got from my wife and in-laws. But whatever. My two four-year-old girls like it.

I also tried the steering wheel on the Burnout Paradise demo, and I actually prefer using the sixaxis. Have not tried it with anything else.

In a nutshell, I highly recommend getting a steering wheel.
 
TopGearFan08, you are missing out with "just" a controller. Plus, you can use the wheel (assuming you get a G25 or DFP) for the PC as well. It's like whipping cream with your fingers. It works but from a outsiders view it'll look painful. ^ ^ I know there are some pretty dang good players that's using the controllers but, it's still more enjoyable to play with a wheel in my opinion.

It does however take some time getting used to it from the start. If you are having too much trouble getting into it, try using automatic gearbox at first. Getting the pedal/wheel work covered first _might_ make it easier for you to then start using the clutch and H-shifter. Everything at once can make things too complicated. License tests might help as well when you've gotten the pedal/wheel.

However, if (as Centura said) you haven't got any chance what so ever of placing it in a somewhat comfortable position then you might want to reconsider. Well, that or you can get constructive. Grab a hammer!

My own experience is that driving the more tail happy cars (e.g. the Elise) is sooo much easier with a wheel as you have much finer control of the throttle and degree of turn.

Driving the Elise with ASM off with the joypad can be a real challenge :) With a wheel, it is much easier to control the balance and therefore much more fun.

There isn't one and there has been no announcement of any sort that there definitely will be. However given the history of GT there has been an official wheel released with the last two iteration of GT. So one could speculate that there will be a new wheel of some sort.

Of course, you'll have to wait for the release of GT5 sometime in 2009. (Please note this is by no means confirmed, but given the history of the GT franchise and the fact that we now know GT5 Prologue won't be released in North America till April I'd say mid-to-late 2009 is a reasonable estimate).

Stop procrastinating, buy a G25 now and get practicing. Your lap times will initially be slower - but they will eventually be faster. Plus the wheel adds a whole new level of immersion and fun to the game (regardless of lap times).

But most importantly...

Solid mount the wheel and pedals to a comfortable 'cockpit'

Buy one or build one. Just don't mount the thing to you coffee or dining table.
 
If you're hurting on space and can't use a PlaySeat (which folds away if needed) for instance, you could go with a "Wheel Station". It is a wheel stand which folds when not in use. So, it can be stored in a closet, under a bed, behind furniture and whatnot. At only $35 bucks or so, it's a good product until you can move up to a better rig.

When I started with my DFP, I hijacked my kid's Whinny The Pooh table to mount the wheel to. I had to sit the dang thing on my knees though to drive. That was pretty uncomfortable for a few months.

But hey, you gotta do what you gotta do.

Get a DFP or a G25 and practice with slower cars. Do license test. You will get used to it. Once you do, you'll be hooked for life.

Go to Best Buy or CC and buy a DFP. Use it, get used to it, then determine if you like it or not. If you do not, then bring it back and go back to the sticks.

PD now makes GT intended first and foremost to be used with a wheel.
 
OK, it seems the G25 would be the best option as its clearly the most realistic which is what I'm after, anything that makes it feel more like the real thing! I can always use the sixaxis for the really tough trials until I get better with the wheel, I guess its like learing to touch type, slower at first then much faster?

Only issue is that the only place I have to mount it would be a fairly high glass desk where I had the Foza 2 wheel, I think I will need to look at getting some sort of special seat and wheel holder, what would you suggest that is OK but I need it pretty cheap too...

Thanks for the help im now sure the wheel will enhance the game! it should also make the early challenges more difficult and fun :)

So what cheap budget seats / cockpits are there to go with a G25, I don't want to be spending huge amounts on the cockpit if possible.

I think I am going to save up for the PLay Seat and G25 combo unless there is a cheaer alternative to the playseat that does most of the same things.
 
Depening on what you're after this may be a chaep alternative
I made mine frome an old pine fold away chair just extended and braced the legs and cut the back rest out .

Buy your G25 through Amazon, set up a temporary Amazon Prime account. This will allow you to have the wheel shipped in 2 days for free or next day for $3.99. Total cost will be about $246 and you'll have it quicker than anywhere else on the net.

I just ordered mine ;)

As for a cockpit, I recommend getting a PlaySeat Evolution. One thing that has me interested in it is how it can be easily folded and put away when you are done racing, if you don't want a rig sitting in the middle of your living room or bedroom all of the time. They have a pretty cool looking Tony Stewart edition that has a big price drop when you order from PlayseatNA.com. It's $250. The same seat on Amazon is still $400!!!

Or, if you don't have the space for a rig at all, I have a "Wheel Station". I've been using it since early '06. It will run you about $35. It's made out of wood. It is collapsible so it can go in a closet, under the bed, or even behind the couch. If you have cats...WATCH OUT!!! The Wheel Station is an ideal scratching post!!! Wrap the legs of stand in aluminum foil and the kitties will bother it no more ;)

Those are my suggestions.

Are rear wheel drive cars easier to drive? I've been having such a ridiculous time trying to handle the corvette with the controller, especially on Daytona. I use Pro physics with everything off, and generally an S tire. I know a lot of it has to do with the throttle response because i can't pedal that well with the controller. Any input would help, thanks!

Both the 599 and the Z06 are a handful when it comes to the rear end coming around. Concerning the 599, KingCars told me to try not to make any erratic or sudden steering inputs. Which I find hard to do. To get that car to turn, you need to crank a lot of wheel into it. Much more than the 430.

as i do this often for real(not in ferraris onfurtunately,but fat bmw and mercedes and last week a corvette!!!!!)in my own bmw wich is an old one with a verry happy rear end,it is all about practice mate...especially when its wet i go out and find a peace of road where i know its safe and just throw the car into corners and catch it...do this at different speeds and learn your "hand overs" for fast turning of the wheel without getting your arms crossed,etc etc etc....this kind of this you should also do on gt5prologue!!!just go on a track and do several corners in a row...try to go sideways abit and catch it,than do this with higher speeds until you got it right!........:):)it will help you in future races beceause your initial response on the wheel at critical(sliding,drifting...) sitiations will be more natural and controlled....:sly:

Hehe, I tried the Time Trial (Z06, Pro, Suzuka) with Dualshock 3. It didn't go so well =/
Going to try it later with G25 tonight. Hopefully it will go better this time!
