I Renown I
I'm a bit of science nut, so I apologize in advance if that seems a bit too nerdy for anyone.

- Same kernel, different angle.

I was popping some of my own popcorn not too long ago (that I just partially finished) and I was wondering how a popped kernel would look...while it's being "popped" and once I saw these two videos (after I was all "O.O; Oooo!!!" and such) it all seemed much more simple than what I had imagined. I've been wondering for a while but didn't actually do anything about it until a few minutes ago. It's not so much that anything is popping, it's bending more than anything else but I'm aware of why it's called "popcorn" anyway. :p

Hopefully I'm not the only geek here who'll think this is awesome.

That is pretty cool, I've never seen it in action before, reminds me of expanding foam insulation.

I don't want to be overly-nerdy here but I have no other choice... :p

The hot oil breaks the shell (most likely to do with moisture) and the endosperm puffs out, rather, it unfolds or bends as I said earlier.

Why does popcorn do that, anyways?

The guts of the kernel, heated up, want to be much bigger than the casing of the kernel. Liquids to gases, pressure buildup, that sort of thing. Makes it go "POP." And since it's corn, they call it . . . . . . . Well, "explodi-maize" just doesn't fit on the label, you know?
