LAIAS: Corvette ZO6 Daytona

LOS ANGELES – A specially outfitted 2006 Corvette Z06 will serve as the official pace car of the 48 th running of the Daytona 500, on Feb. 19. “Tonight Show” host and auto enthusiast Jay Leno will drive the pace car.

The Daytona 500 is NASCAR’s premier race and traditionally kicks off the Nextel Cup racing season. Selection of the Z06 model marks the second consecutive year that a Corvette has been selected as the Daytona 500 pace car.

“It is a wonderful honor to have Corvette serve once again as the Daytona 500 pace car,” said Ed Peper, Chevrolet general manager. “Chevrolet has a long, successful history at Daytona and there’s no better vehicle to showcase our performance legacy than the Corvette Z06 – a car that was born on the race track.”

The Corvette Z06 that will serve as the Daytona 500 pace car is mechanically identical to those available at Chevrolet dealerships. It is the fastest vehicle ever offered by Chevrolet and General Motors. With 505 horsepower (377 kw) and 470 lb.-ft. of torque (637 Nm) from its 7.0L all-aluminum, racing-inspired engine, the Corvette Z06 leaps from 0-60 mph in 3.7 seconds and has a top speed of 198 mph. It also differs from other production Corvette models with extensive use of lightweight materials, including carbon-fiber front fenders and a chassis comprised of aluminum and magnesium. A racing-ready suspension and large, 18-inch front wheels and 19-inch rear wheels help keep it glued to the tarmac, so it requires no drivetrain modifications to satisfy its role in front of the racing pack. In its official capacity, however, the pace car is outfitted with a variety of safety equipment and highly visible strobe lights.

Interestingly, the Corvette Z06’s 505-horsepower (377 kw) output is actually more than the power produced by the race cars that will compete in the Daytona 500 – a first for a pace car. This is because of the unique “restrictor plate” rule established for the Daytona and Talladega , Ala. racetracks. On these 2.5-mile-long super speedways, the restrictor plate reduces airflow into the engine to limit horsepower and keep race car speeds below 200 mph. With a restrictor plate, racing engine power is reduced from about 750 horsepower to about 450 horsepower. Race cars can still average more than 190 mph on Daytona’s long straights.

The Corvette Z06 Daytona 500 wears a unique paint scheme, inspired by the hot-to-cool color transition of a space capsule entering Earth’s atmosphere at a high rate of speed. The paint scheme is carried out with an elaborate, interlocking scallops design – a twist on hot rod-style flames – that blends “hot” Lemon Drop yellow at the nose of the Corvette with Lemon Glow, Amber Ecstasy, Blazing Copper and Hot Poppy. The colors culminate with a cool Sapphire Trance blue color at the rear of the vehicle. DuPont, the sponsor of Jeff Gordon’s No. 24 Monte Carlo, supplied the colors, which are from the company’s “Hot Hues” line of automotive paint.

“As if the Corvette Z06 needed help in looking fast, the intricate paintwork of the pace car gives it the appearance of tremendous speed,” said Peper. “It is one of the most elaborate and stunning vehicle designs we’ve created.”

Leno behind the wheel

Jay Leno, host of the “Tonight Show” and an unabashed auto enthusiast, will drive the Corvette Z06 during opening ceremonies and the pace laps that start the race. Leno, who has a large collection of vintage automobiles and motorcycles, has previous experience as a pace car driver.

Chevrolet returns to the Daytona 500 with 18 victories – the most of any manufacturer – including last year’s champion Jeff Gordon. Chevrolet also returns as the defending manufacturer’s cup champion, an award that has been bestowed 29 times. Also, defending Nextel Cup champion Tony Stewart drives the No. 20 Chevrolet Monte Carlo for Joe Gibbs Racing.

“The Corvette Z06 already is a performance legend and the fans will enjoy seeing it lead their favorite drivers around Daytona’s famous tri-oval,” said Robin Braig, president of Daytona International Speedway. “It promises to be a great race, and kicking it off with a Corvette at the head of the pack is the best way to start.”

Onikaze
Thats a neat twist.

A Pace Car that could probably be competitive in the race.

Ya considering in other years they've had a Chevy SSr and a Dodge Ram, two things that aren't fast.

- Post Race Report -

"In a shocking twist today, famed late night talk show host and car enthusiast Jay Leno wins The legendary Daytona 500 in the Corvette Z06 Pace Car...."

" in other news, two race car drivers retire after 7 years of racing proffesionaly....stating " If that unfunny bastard can beat us in our own race, we don't belong in racing ""

Surprised at the paintjob but I kinda like it. Nice to see the Vette again as a pace car. :dopey:

Lucky bastard... rides his chin into primetime... makes enough money to buy any car he wants... and he does... and NOW he gets to drive in the Daytona 500... in what will possibly the fastest car on track, even if it just for a few laps.

I'd love to be him... the discomfort of trying to fit that chin into a race helmet would be worth it.

That's nothing, he got to drive a Porsche Carrera GT as fast as he could around one of the like 30 degree banked tracks over here.

I think he said something about it...

"It's great when someone hands you the keys to a $425,000 Supercar and says 'go ahead, do as many burnouts as you think you need too'"

That paint scheme is similar to one that I created for Forza. It was on a viper though.
post #231 on in the Forza pics thread.

Fades from white to yellow to orange to red then to black on the rear. Somehow on the front it has a pearl effect.

I just want to know when Chevy are going to learn to paint the insides of the headlights black.

I just want to know when Chevy are going to learn to paint the insides of the headlights black.

Why would they do that? It's part of the body and the clear lens is just to prevent breakage from rocks and what not.

The Viper has been a pace car before anyway, so its not like this allows the Vette to get one up on the Viper. :dopey:

VIPFREAK
 Viper hasn't been around as long but when it got here it man handled the Vette all over the place. :dopey:

:D 👍
and even though the Viper is younger than the Vette, it is still held in high regard and has an impressive record on the track. Personally, I like both cars, the two V's (Viper and Vette) are two of the nicest sportscars available, its just that the Viper has been my favourite car ever since I first gazed upon its lines. :sly:

I would be a hell of a decision thats for sure...

here, have a SRT-10 or here, have a Z06...

I would take the SRT-10,

Then Sell it, buy a ZO6 and with the extra $20'000.00 buy LOTS OF TIRES

Yeah, I'm gonna go with what Jay said, except I'd spend the $20,000 difference on a second car, probably something from the late 80's or early 90's, RWD, light, and then tinker with it.

Besides, where the Vette says "I'm 50 and enjoying my cash" the Viper only says "I'M NOT VERY SECURE IN MY MANHOOD"...or at least it does in my opinion, I mean cars don't get much more Phallic than that.

The Viper was always faster than the Corvette and cost a lot more because of it. Now they're the same, yet the Viper still costs a lot more. Odd.

Id have to say that it is the best Pace Car the Daytona 500 has had since the 2002 Trans Am WS6 Pace Cars... Cant wait for the Daytona option on the Z06s at the Chevrolet dealers, har har...

As far as the Viper fight goes, I've always been on the side of the Corvette... Way, way, way back in the day the Dodge Viper RT/10 was not a whole lot faster than the Corvette ZR1 of the era.

I can recall an "American Muscle Shootout" issue of Motor Trend from 1993 where they gathered the best American performance cars and rung them out at Daytona, as well as other tracks that involve left and right hand turns, and ironicly it was Jay Leno who was driving the cars during much of the testing...

The cars:
- Dodge Viper RT/10
- Chevrolet Corvette ZR1
- Chevrolet Corvette Z51 (back when it was a "hidden" option)
- Chevrolet Camaro Z/28
- Pontiac Firebird Formula V8
- GMC Typhoon
- Ford Mustang SVT Cobra

1) The F-body twins were crowned the best buy vehicles, combining a great ammount of speed at a relitively affordable price.

2) The Mustang SVT Cobra was allready being called outdated in 1993 (still on the Fox platform as it stayed until 2004), but they said it was a good rival to the new Z/28 and Firebird Formula/Trans AM.

3) The GMC Typhoon was the fastest accelerating vehcile to 30 and 40 MPH, but lost out in the 60MPH run due to the four speed auto. Still a performance icon today...

4) The Corvettes were fairly evenly matched, and the edditors were split as to which one was better. Undenyably the ZR1 had more power and a better overall setup, but the Z51 kept up on the tack with a slightly less "squirmy" feel to it.

5) The Viper RT/10 was a riot, even in 1993. It lacked every major option that even comes standard on Kias today, including power windows (actually uses leather straps to pull them up), no A/C, hardly any sound proofing, and mildly passable interior plastics by todays standards... It was often called a kit car, but it was the fastest in the test (not by a long shot however), and it cost about the same as the ZR1. So back in 1993, the Viper was a good deal...

Funny how things change, huh?

The Viper is just in a class of its own. It's sort of like a modern Cobra, only much much bigger. It's terribly powerful and stiff, and it doesn't let you forget it... every single bump and camber on the road tells you you're not man enough for the car.

The Vette is more approachable, but not any less able... at least, with the Z06, not anymore.

They're both wonderful cars.

Certainly...

I had the oppertunity to drive a 1996 Dodge Viper GTS and it was a blast. But the body and chassis refuses to be quiet and is full of squeaks and rattles. Thankfully the V10 is loud enough to cover up much of that, assuming you are driving the car correctly (foot to the floor), and stay away from rough roads (where else are you going to go to ring it out?).

Pros: Insane power, good looks, nice sound (except on startup), gets attention
Cons: Cramped and rather spartan interior, odd shift position, squeaks and rattles
Verdict: A good looking and rather fast sports car for the modern playboy

I don't know where these whining p***ies come from... I've heard so many people b**** and complain about all these little things that are insigificant. If your a real Viper Lover (apparently that's fanboy here  ) none of those little things bother you. I've been in a bunch of Vipers and everytime I never had any time to care about the car because I was constantly having to "hold on for dear life". :scared:  Not to mention that V10 is so friggin loud you can't hear anything anyway, a radio is pretty much worthless and why would you want one with that bad ass sound.

I dunno if I would put it in the realm of badass, espically uppon startup... It reminds me of my John Deere to tell you the truth... But once the car it running, it sounds pretty good, but its no better than a V8.

Personally, I prefer the sound of a Chevrolet small or big block V8 over the Viper V10. It has more of a classic feel to it, and has a bit more bite than the outrageous growl put out by the Viper.

THEY ARE ON A LEVEL FIELD, BUT I PREFER A V8...

As for calling everyone out for not liking the Viper, I dont think it is necessiarily the right thing to do. Its not that I didnt like it, but the Corvette is better. The interior is much more liveable, the transmission is easier to operate, and it offers up the same ammount of thrills that the Viper gives off in most situations. I think the biggest difference between the two is that you get a lot more attention in the Viper, both wanted and unwanted.

By todays standards, the GTS is no faster than the C6 Z51 or C5 Z06 Ive driven, and both of the Corvettes were far better suited to my 6ft 170lb body than the Viper. That being, I wouldnt mind having a Viper, but if given the choise, I would much rather have a Corvette.
