As an engine manufacturer.
I don't have much information to bring to this, hence why I'm asking.
Just something I heard mentioned today and I thought that it was a perfectly logical assumption.

If mods feel the need to kill with fire, please merge with the turbo chargers+V6 thread.

Mentioned where? Porsche did flirt with the idea, but all those hints fell short in June when it announced a LMP1 program starting in 2014. That leaves the door open for VW/Audi.

Not anything official, it was just a discussion I had with a friend today.

I suppose it would be illogical for them to invest time and resources into both an F1 and LMP program.

I doubt they'd use the developments from the F1 program with the LMP1 engine since it's supposed to be a hybrid.

I think their KERS could be pretty good with what they've done with the GT3 RHybrid.

Having a member of the board of directors with an interest in F1 helps. Thats basically it.
Any other reason except perhaps global marketing isn't a real reason. Its just corporate talk to make such adventures seem more sensible to the shareholders, customers, etc.

The only reason any manufacturer gets involved is marketing.

LMP1 is enough money and effort to keep Porsche busy. Perhaps there are a couple of carry-overs of KERS and Hybrids but I doubt its anything really meaningful. Have Porsche even developed their own Hybrid yet or are they still using Williams' flywheel system?

I very much doubt we will ever see any manufacturer commit to both fully fledged LMP1 and F1 programmes at the same time unless they are on a mad spending spree like Group Lotus recently or if they are already so successful in F1 that they can afford to (Ferrari, McLaren, Williams). Perhaps as an engine supplier this will be different though.

Maybe Porsche will enter as an engine supplier, but as I say, this entirely depends on the interest of the people in charge more than anything else. It needs a guy like Mario Theissen to really drive the company towards these commitments.
