Coulthard hits out at Juan Pablo's Red Bull overtures

31/03/2006

Having lost out once to Juan Pablo Montoya, when the Colombian took his seat at McLaren, David Coulthard has no intention of allowing history to repeat itself at Red Bull.

At the end of 2004, there were fears that the Scot's F1 career was at an end. Dropped by McLaren in favour of Montoya, Coulthard seemed destined for the F1 scrapheap, or at the very least one of F1's also-rans.

Then came Red Bull's purchase of Jaguar, but this was soon followed by Dietrich Mateschitz' claim that he wasn't interested in the thirteen time Grand Prix winner.

However, a change of heart, proved beneficial for both parties; Coulthard's career got a much needed boost, and his image a non-corporate makeover, while Red Bull got the benefit of a driver who, after 180 Grands Prix, was still capable of fighting for points and wins.

Now however, as Juan Pablo Montoya waits to see who McLaren will choose to partner Fernando Alonso, the Colombian is preferring not to put all his eggs in one basket, and is making no secret of the fact that he is looking elsewhere.

One of the teams that has attracted his attention is Red Bull, which besides having plenty of 'folding stuff', is recruiting some of the best people in the business, leading some F1 insiders to tip the Austrian owned outfit as a potential race winner in 2007.

Speaking to reporters in Melbourne however, Coulthard made it clear that he has no intention of doing all the groundwork only for Montoya to, once again, reap the rewards.

"He has just got to shut up and get on with it," snapped the Scot, when asked about Montoya's claim that he is interested in the Red Bull seat. "I can't comment on rumours, I can only comment on fact.

"The statistics show that relative to Kimi, he has not done as well as I did," he continued. "I know that McLaren use that type of information to make decisions, and he simply has not done anything remarkable... one year in, he has had a clear indication from McLaren that they are not that impressed."

As I've yet to hear of this, thought I'd drag it out here.

And DC has brought up a very good point, what has Montoya done in the McMerc? Won a few races which, except for Brazil perhaps, could have been won by a blind stormtrooper.

I'd love to see a DC-Montoya line up, but I don't see Red Bull getting rid of their little corporate robot Klien.

Also on the cards for Montoya is Toyota, BMW and a very tasty looking seat at Renault.

If Montoya goes to Renault, that's going to suck. If he goes to BMW, it will just give me another reason to hate him and BMW even more. The whole reason I stop liking williams is when they teamed up with BMW and signed JPM.

My friend Andreas is a stupid JPM fanboy (most likely because they're both colombian). I should show him this and see if he shuts up a bit.

Go DC!

I can't really see Montoya leaving McLaren so early. I imagine that he would stay on to partner Alonso while Raikkonen goes to Ferrari. He probably wouldn't want that though, since he would probably want to be a team leader. If Montoya leaves McLaren, he'll probably replace Villeneuve at BMW Sauber.

Because the only way to replace a north-american fat-headed jerk is with a south-american one.

 I like your style.

Maybe he will join Ronald McDonald in the new 12th team...

He won't. Don't put your eggs in the basket about it.

Poverty
Kimi has got to stay with mclaren.

I doubt he will. From what I'm reading (not a whole of trust in it as all ideas are mere speculation) Kimi is headed for Ferrari. That said, flies are buzzing about Schumi packing bags for Renault, and JPM to Toyota, no idea on who would partner with Alonso for the Ronster. Makes for interesting driver shuffles however.Time will tell...

Nico Rosberg has aparentally been talking to Ron Dennis..

Alonso and Nico for McLaren 07? Blast...

You know... what ever happened to Williams that caused such a decrease in their earlier domination anyway?

...ehh, the FIA backed Ferrari 100% to gain total F1 dominance to test the waters in advance of Max Mosely's plan for complete and absolute control of the world so that he could be named King of the omniverse?
