Couple PS3 Questions

Sorry, the post is a little long. I have a 2nd gen and a 3rd gen ps3 (both fat). The 2nd gen Ive had for 4yrs and have had no issues with it (knock on wood). The 3rd gen I acquired a few weeks ago and had the YLOD. Did a reflow, cleaned it out, and applied MG thermal paste. She is running VERY smooth...(for now).
To the point, I decided since its been 4 yrs and I have yet to crack open the 2nd gen, I would. I tore it apart very carefully, cleaned that out(VERY dusty), and applied the same MG thermal paste...which Ive used many many times.
I keep the 2nd gen downstairs and it is about 80deg. I do not play it when its this hot but I wanted to check it after I put it back together. I did the "5min fan check". 1st question...how many fan speeds do the fat models have? In 5 min, it went though 3 fan speeds, slow...slightly faster...then medium(I think). Ive only heard it get louder than that a couple times. The case got pretty warm quick too. I have a feeling I might have put a little too much thermal paste on it...or I could be just overly worried since this on is my baby lol. What would be the outcome of a little too much thermal paste? Would it not transfer heat to the heatsinks as well or no. I only applied a thin layer just enough to not see the face of the processor. Rule of thumb Ive always gone by is, if warm/hot air comes out the rear vents...the thermal paste must be working right? Which there was. About to do a side by side comparison of the 2 models in the air conditioned upstairs to insure the gen 2 doesnt kick the fan on faster. Anyone have any thoughts? Id prefer not to take the 2nd gen back apart as that one is a b*tch to put back together. thanks...:)

The 2nd gen kicked into medium speed earlier than the 3rd gen. Warm air also came out the back vents MUCH earlier than the 3rd gen. Does that mean the 2nd gen is cooling better or not as good? Higher fan speed means higher internal heat right?
