Crossed Transmission

I was watching an episode of BMI earlier and the specs said the car had a "crossed tranmission in 1st and 3rd gears". I've never heard of this term before, so could someone please explain it or link me to somewhere with an explanation. I've searched on Google and in the Automotive sub-forum here with no luck.

Thanks in advance.

I haven't actually heard that paticular term before or seen the episode but I think they mean the trans jammed 1st and 3rd gears in the same time, which causes the trans and drivetrain to lock up. This has happened to me before in my old Holden Commodore 4 speed manual (luckly when the car wasn't moving).

Unless they mean it had a crossed transmission as a feature? Got a link to a clip of it?

Yeah, they mention is as a feature.

Sounds like your jam could have been scary (and expensive) had the car been moving.

It could be what is also referred to as a "dog-leg" transmission:
Code:
   2 4 6
   | | |
----------
| | |
1 3 5

This gives you a straight path between 2nd & 3rd.

Sounds like a good suggestion, but sadly the box is just a standard H-pattern with no dog-leg. The driver (Hattori) is shown downshifting into second at the bottom left of the gate (gait?).

I can only imagine it means 1st and 3rd gears are swapped in the pattern ie:

3 1 5
2 4 6

I have seen this in a race car a very long time ago. The driver had done this because he kept missing 3rd when going up through the gears. With the new pattern he could 'jam' the 1st to 2nd to 3rd changes hard without fear of missing the gate. Of course I'm only guessing this is what they mean.

That looks strange as alien language to me....shift pattern like that...

Nope, the gears appeared to be in normal positions.
