There are often suggestions for a London track - well, rather than an imaginary one why not the historic Crystal Palace which was set in beautiful park land only a few minutes from the London Tube Station.
From 1927 until 1972 the fabulous Crystal Palace circuit in London hosted a wide variety of races for motorcycles, F1, F2, F3, BSCC (Saloons) etc. The circuit was originally two miles in length. The first race was won by Prince Bira in his ERA Romulus and the first televised broadcast of motor racing in the UK was made by the BBC from Crystal Palace circuit.
In 1953 the track re-opened and was shortened to 1.39 miles. The lap record of 103.39mph was set in 1972 by Mike Hailwood in an F1 car. the first over 100mph lap was recorded by Jochen Rindt in 1970.
Unfortunately due to noise nuisance to local residents and the rising speeds of cars which made the track unsafe, it was closed in September 1972. Some of the track still remains and is used occasionally for sprinting. The track was immortalised in the PC games Grand Prix Legends and rFactor. I would love to race the historic and classic cars from the GT series around this track, which with its lack of run off areas etc would be perfect for classic racing.
Enjoy this classic clip from the 1964 Crystal palace BSCC round with commentary by the inimitable Mr Chumley-Warner.
