Some tracks give penalties for some of the most ridiculous things! For example, if you cut the Dipper on Mount Panorama, a penalty is incurred but, if the room host turns penalties off, some racers cut the Esses!

If the room host could customise WHAT penalties were given and the time the perpetrator is penalized, I think things would run a lot smoother!

I have noticed that in some cases, a person can have time taken off at the end of a race. Well, IMHO, THAT should be for ALL penalties instead of having cars "ghosting" and causing the other drivers to lose focus!

THEN it would be like a REAL race with obstacles to avoid...

What a good idea.

I've always thought the ghosting of the penalized cars was completely unrealistic - very arcade like. And you're right, they can be extremely distracting.

All you need is a warning to appear on the HUD "Time Penalty Occurred" and then like you say, add it on at the end of the race.
You could even expand the idea that after repeated penalties the driver could be disqualified! Harsh, but it would make drivers think about their lines more.

A disqualification is definitely harsh but also a good idea! However, that could be left up to the host.

Personally, I think that "drive through" penalties might be a little more appropriate. Think, a 10 lap race and some poor bugger has 9 drive throughs - how PO'd would he be? The frustration would be intense, but it would teach him (or her) to stop cutting or ramming!
