OK, I recently picked up a Motorola i836 (on Nextel) and realized the inital tones it comes with are crap.

With nearly 100 different contacts (work related) and 3 back-up batteries, I tend to spend alot of time on the phone. Most days, 4+ hours.

Its time to add some personality to the phone. Here's the scenario... I've got 300+ CD's and many of them have portions that I'd like to utilize for my phone. The Boss, the Wife, the PM, the plumber.... All sorts.

My problem is there is next to nothing on the web, that I can find, that allows me to take a portion of a song and load it into my phone as a ringtone.

I'd like to do this from my computer, so granted, I'd be working from an MP3. Hence my posting in the computers forum.

I'll even take a ringtones website that is recommended.

Yes, the phone supports polyphonic ringtones. (does this mean I can't use MP3?)

A lot of polyphonic tones are actually MIDI files. If you search for these on Google, you can often turn up decent MIDI files of your favourite tunes. Edit them using a MIDI editor (there are several shareware ones around), then transfer them to the phone. The phone should recognise it as a ringtone and allow you to set it up.

I'd suggest looking into BitPim. It will allow you to transfer files to and from your cellphone via a USB to serial data cable. I've had limited success with it though. Sometimes I can get files transferred and sometimes I can't.
