I consider myself to have been around GT for a very long time... I don't think you can really begin before the first game..

When i was little and playing the first game.. i used the d-pad. I can't even remember if the original playstation had sticks??

To this day i still use the d-pad. I hate the sticks.. i just lack the finesse to move them appropriately. I am much too accustomed to my tap-tap-hold-tap methods haha.

SO, Does anybody else still use the D-pad?


I plan on buying a wheel eventually, likely in the coming month when I begin a higher paying job haha. I've used a couple wheels before at some buddy's places, i really like them... but otherwise its all d-pad and buttons for me.

I'm proud user of analog sticks but i'm going to buy steering wheel sooner or later.
 
I use the D-pad almost exclusively. Not touched an analogue stick (outside of games which require it - GTA) in my life.

That said, S1 tyres + Pro physics + 600PP car + controller = tricky. So I shall be rehearsing my wheelcraft before I go online in non-beginner races.
 
nope i dont use the d pad anymore, i find the analog sticks are faster in my lap times
 
Well maybe it is time I learn to use the sticks..

I have to agree that at high speeds with no stability control and slight turns make for problematic situations.
 
I use the D-pad in most games that will let me (Only in F1:CE I use the analog sticks instead). And here I thought I was the only one!
 
if you don't have a steering wheel.. using the analogue helps to bridge the gap more than using the d-pad. It gives you move turning angle.
 
I really must admire someone who can actually race with the analog stick or the d-pad. Keeping all the buttons straight and driving is just too much of a nightmare for me. Talented indeed are those who can use the controller for GT!
 
D-Pad for me. Would only probably consider a steering wheel if I wanted to be ranked high in the events i guess.

In terms of online gaming experience, I don't think I'm getting outplayed. Although the steering wheel does add to the excitement which you dont get with a simple controller.
 
Never used the d-pad for a racing game since I've had the analogue stick option! I do think the d-pad has been better since the PS2 when the buttons were pressure sensitive though, I can imagine they can be used to reasonable effect in games like GT where you need a good degree of sensitivity to control your car.
 
I don't use the dpad in gt or tt, but I use it for MX games (mx vs. atv). For untamed, I actually have to use a ps2-usb adapter (and a dualshock 2) because the game forces the analog sticks if you use the sixaxis/dualshock3
 
I'm a Sixaxis D-pad user and have been since the days of GT-1. I also use the square and X buttons for brake and throttle.

I'm, pretty proud of the fact that I can mix it with just about everybody here on the PRO 600PP races and more recently the F430 vs GTR Pro event, and I also have been able to post top 10 times in the GTP lap times threads that Timppaq started in the tuning forums.

I would love to think that using a wheel will bring me extra laptime and move me into a bracket where only the very best operate, but maybe I have become so used to the controller and d-pad, that maybe I am as fast as I will ever be.

I am going to purchase a G25 as soon as I get back from my holiday to find out just how good I am :)

Actually, there are a bunch of threads on this subject, so I'm not sure why you got no search results.

After having a wheel, I can barely imagine going back to analog sticks - and FORGET the d-pad. Might as well go back to trying to play NASCAR96 on my computer keyboard. Dunno why anyone would want to drive that way, though many people who do are quite capable of kicking my ass on course.

I grew up flying model airplanes, so maybe that's why I'm more comfortable with the analog sticks. But why you'd WANT to use d-pads if something better was an option is entirely beyond me.

Driving with a wheel and pedals is so much better an experience that it's irrelevant whether it is faster or not.

In my case it's simply a matter of what I got used to playing driving games on Mega Drive, SNES, PS1,2 etc and what felt the most natural based on myown experience. Yet strangely I was extremely comfortable using the analog sticks for NFS games..

I have absolutely no doubt it is a more fun and encompassing experience, and I have decided to purchase a G25 when I get home again. However I have to disagree personally about it being irrelevant which method is faster, as that is where a lot of the enjoyment of the game for me lies, being fastest.

I remember a thread Stotty started about how he was slower to begin with using a G25 and was a little disappointed. I am quite sure he's more than up to speed now, but I too would be a little disappointed if while the wheel offered a much more fun experience, I couldn't match my times using d-pad and buttons.

The main areas of satisfaction and enjoyment from this game are just a personal thing, different for everyone of course. I can only speak for myself. Having said that, I'm dying to play the game with the G25 setup.

i still use the D-pad... proud GT2- GTP d-pad user
 
The reason i opt to not use the sticks.. is because i am not coordinated well enough with them in GT. When it comes to slight input, i just can't do it, i jitter around in any car more than i would with the d-pad.

I agree that it would be disappointing to purchase a wheel, and then be slower with it for a while. However, it would be great to be able to drive with a wheel, i would assume the control is much better.. something i often have to find ways to compensate for with the d-pad.
