Well, it's New years Eve and still no Dakar thread. The race starts on 1st January although actual stages get under way on the 2nd.

Not got time to post much but will be on with comments as the race unfolds. If you need a point in the right direction to be able to download the Eurosport preview programs drop me a PM.
 
I've got the sky+ set for Eurosport HD tomorrow night, but knowing how non specific the programme start times are on Eurosport I'll probably end up with an hour of tobogganing :dopey:
 
Some stunning photos there GG, cheers. It all kicks off later on, lets hope Eurosport does us a favour and keeps it more or less on schedule.
 
Around 40 minutes before the race starts here. I'm going to watch it on TV. 👍

Heard last night that a spectator had been killed. Sad news.
 
Yes, a woman. Sad news indeed, but in my opinion, it was the woman's fault, regardless of what happened. You just shouldn't be close to the cars/trucks.

On a different note, I'm looking forward to watching Robby Gordon in the desert, did you see his scenery exploration yesterday :lol:

I have yet to ever see a Dakar Race on TV sense like, 00'. I need to catch this...

Anyone know if there's TV coverage of the event in Canada? Can't seem to find anything.
 
OLN has had coverage in past years, but it's been minimal.

Ya, OLN had a half hour Dakar show highlighting the previous day's stages but I can't seem to see it anywhere on OLN this year.
 
Realised/remembered after I went to bed last night that the link I've got for the Dakar coverage is members only now.

You can get Eurosport player which costs £4 for a month but I'm not sure if you can get it overseas.
 
If your in the U.S. try Verses. They have half hour highlights everyday.

Some big names have retired already.


Casteu out with quite bad injuries after a fall today, hopefully a speedy recovery for him.

Nani Roma out yesterday (I think) after rolling the X3 down a massive drop and bending it.

Peterhansel must have had big problems today as he's lost 2 hours on the time sheets.

Some proper hardcore action too including a Britsh bloke who when he ran wide on a water splash and as the front left suspension got ripped off the steering wheel broke his thumb. He's repaired the car and still running last I heard.
 
Italian rider Luca Manca is out of the rally after a serious accident, latest I've heard is that he was to be flown to the neurology department of Santiago(? It could be somewhere else, I'm not 100% with South American geography) Hospital. His condition is life-threatening.

It was just yesterday he was being praised by his peers for the assistance he gave to Marc Coma, who was losing time with a deflated rear Pirelli.

Hope he recovers from his injuries with no severe repurcussions.
 
A few people hurt yesterday, although none as seriously as Luca Manca.

Loving the Hummer. It's even madder than its driver, and he's as mad as a box of frogs.
 
Hope Luca makes a full and speedy recovery. He seemed like a top bloke when they were talking to him after he gave his wheel to Marc Coma.

That shot on the coverage yesterday of the Hummer coming towards the helicopter yesterday was excellent. He doesn't like backing off much does he?
 
As the last stage starts Despres seems to have his win sewn up.

Over in the cars it's tense at the VW camp as there's less than 3 minutes between Sainz and Al-Attiyah. They had words yesterday after Al-Attiyah bumped Sainz as he passed him. He had been behind him using his sentinel to try and get past for about 180km. No team orders here it seems.

Good to hear Luca Manca is now doing a lot better, he's awake and has been talking to his family.


Proper respect to anyone who makes the finish and commiserations to anyone who hasn't.


Edit: Just checked the live timing on the Dakar website and it shows Despres as having not passed the 1st checkpoint at 6km. Hope it's just his iritrack not working.

On the Versus recap last night I thought they said Gordon nerfed Sainz. After Gordon let him by, Sainz was holding him up. I miss Robby in Indycars!

Insanely close battle for the overall lead!
 
Yeah, that was a couple of days ago and did a slight bit of damage to Sainz's car although it didn't seem to cost him any time.


Robbie Gordon has been excellent to watch, flat out wherever he can be with big air in places. Big jump of the start ramp and doughnuts at the finish too. He says he'll be back next year with a 4 wheel drive Hummer.

Nasser Al Attiyah is a brilliant competitor and I'd say a definite for a future win of the Dakar, I don't know if any of you noticed when Sainz & Al Attiyah were talking to each other after their "coming together"

Nasser to Carlos - You need to learn about the sentinel, 180kms I was trying to get past

Carlos to Nasser - Just like the other day then when I was trying to get past you for 150kms

Apparently Nasser couldn't hear his sentinel being activated by the quickly approaching Sainz

A case of tit for tat possibly?
