The spectacle starts again! Two weeks full of craziness, who is watching?

Following the decision of Peru to withdraw from the 2016 edition, the Dakar has leaned on its knowledge of the Argentinean and Bolivian territories to come up with an alternate route. Thanks to the unwavering support of the Argentinian government as well a s of the Bolivian authorities, the new route calls for daring, on the technical and high - speed stages... but not only.

I'll be cheering for Al-attiyah, but other than checking the days results on the App I don't follow it that closely.

If you want to see what Dakar can do to you, search for the documentary Dakar I love it I hate it.

It follows Tom Coronel and you will literally see him have several severe mental ups and downs.
There was a biker several years ago that completely lost his mind and started riding around in circles near the end of the rally when he got lost and knew he was throwing his chances away, from Spain maybe? I dont know which would be worse, having to deal with the expectations of winning with a factory ride and failing or just trying to finish the rally as a independent.

U.S. TV coverage starts Jan 4th 5:30 PM ET on NBCSN.

18yr old Sheldon Creed will drive the 337 Gordini.

I just came back home after seeing the start, will upload some pics later!
There are news about a serious accident in the Shakedown, the chinese Mini injures at least eight short-minded people that don't know what a "no public" zone is.

From the news feed..

19:17 : Accident on the prologue
There has been an accident at km 6.6 of the prologue's special, with car no. 360 veering off the road and hitting four spectators. The organisers immediately deployed all resources available to the site of the accident: four medical helicopters, three medical vehicles belonging to the organisers and eight local ambulances.Injured individuals are likely to be swiftly taken to hospitals in the area following an initial medical evaluation by the organisers' medical teams on the site. The race directors immediately decided to neutralise the race. The remainder of the trip to the Rosario bivouac will be considered a link section.

Argentine news are talking about three critical injured. Things like this shouldn't occur, people has to realize where is not safe to watch the race.

Prologue cancelled after a XRaid Mini driven by debutant Guo Meiling dove into the crowds.

4 people injured are the latest reports.

Argentine TV is showing amateur footage of the incident. The Mini landed on its nose after a fast jump and the driver lost control. The public was standing in a dangerous zone: no trees or rocks alongside the road, same level as the track and just after a bump that made the cars fly. Their are speaking of two critically injured, 12 in total now.

People shouldn't be allowed to spectate over there considering all of that information.

Sadly I think Rallying of almost any sort sets the benchmark for the most dangerous form of spectating. I think there are Four types of people in this situation; those who stand where instructed and follow all safety rules, those that understand the risks but will bend the rules if they get a chance*, those that don't know what is safe and what isn't and just stand where they can see best, and people who intentionally disregard all rules and advice because they think they're being clever. My level of sympathy for those injured varies depending on which of those groups they are in, but my level of sympathy for those that have to deal with it, is always utmost. I've witnessed all first hand at various events, but the most bone-headed almost obnoxiously stupid behavior was at WRC Wales.

*I think I'm in that group, btw.

^ I'm quite Jealous actually, the Dakar is an event I would love to go and see first hand, but I can't imagine how much it would cost be able to go and see enough of it to make it worth it.

Actually, whilst typing I did a quick google.. as a minimum it would be £1500-2000.. and to do it "properly" about £5000.

It's a great experience. Just remember to ue some sunblock in your arms (talking from experience).
It's uncertain where the next Dakar will be actually (most people here hate it tbh, and with a new goverment and the withdraw from Peru and Chile the organizers are not very happy).
