The Grand Prix 2 series was a replacement for the Formula 3000 series and began in 2005, and was a support series for the Formula 1 World Championship. For the 2006 season the Dallara GP2/05 would be used, powered by Renault 4.0 V8's with Bridgestone racing slicks and Brembo brakes.

Nelson Piquet started the 2006 season on a high, winning Valencia ahead of then rookie drivers, Lewis Hamilton and Adrian Valles, the latter of which failed to score a single point for the rest of the season. Bruni and Viso then shared victories at Imola where Hamilton failed to score due to being black flagged in the feature, and started the sprint at the back of the pack.

Hamilton was on course to win at Barcelona but he collided with teammate Premat on the last lap. Premat won with Hamilton finishing second. Hamilton then went on to win 3 races in a row, winning a race at Monaco and then winning both races at Silverstone, where he overtook Piccione and Piquet in one move.

After Magny-Cours, Hamilton had a massive 26 point lead ahead of Piquet, but Piqeut had a perfect weekend at Hungary, taking pole, 2 wins and 2 fastest laps while Hamilton failed to score due to starting at the back of the grid after spinning in qualifying.

Piquet's form continued in Turkey, where he won the feature from pole while Hamilton was second. Hamilton spun in the sprint but quickly recovered to take second place while Piquet had to settle for 5th.

Hamilton was still 10 points ahead at the final weekend at Monza but Piquet cut that to 8 by taking pole. Pantano beat both of them in the feature and had also set the fastest lap with Piquet second and Hamilton third, and it looked like the championship would be decided in the final race, However Pantano was seen to have ignored yellow flags on his fastest lap so that time was disallowed, giving a point to Hamilton who now clinched onto the title.

Pantano made a fantastic start to the race, going from 8th to 1st in the first corner, and went on to win the race with Hamilton 2nd. Hamilton won the championship 12 points ahead of Piquet.

Winning the GP2 Championship in 2006 earned Hamilton a drive at McLaren in Formula 1 for 2007, with him finishing second in the drivers championship, tied with Fernando Alonso and just 1 point behind Kimi Raikonen.
