I'm Having problems with this External laptop hd
note: there is an invaluable amount of data (webdesigns / flash for clients) recovering this data is in higher precedence than saving the HD.

1. The hd is a 80gb Hitachi travelstar, 4200 rpm, 16383cyl, 16 heads, 63 sec/t
2. It was previously used in a laptop for some time loaded with windows 2000
3. It was then enclosed in a usb external case (power and data via usb)
4. This setup has been working for 4 months.

The problem:

The HD is giving generally general errors.
1. When plugged into a pc, the os (XP) recognizes the drive as a mass storage device (as it normally should) and then locks up the system. all functions cease until its unplugged again.
2. I removed the hd form the external case and remounted it into the original laptop (IBM T40 2373). when booting, it gives the
"DISK READ ERROR, PRESS CTRL ALT DELETE TO RESTART"
3. Super ERD commander didn't even boot up.
4. the bios does not read it either

A 2.5in hd adapter is going in the desktop tonight, to house the bad hd (slave). I will be using a 200 gb and a 120 gb HD for the backup if indeed files can be recovered.

I dont know where to start, (and absolutey not paying $500+ for services).
Any idea that can be used would be greatly appreciated.

Is it formatted as fat or fat32? If it is fat, you could try getting a Linux live cd and running fsck.vfat on it.

If it is fat32, especially encrypted/compressed fat32, I am sorry to say that I think you may be you sh**s creek without a paddle.

My external USB hard drive seems rather prone to filesystem errors (it is formatted as ext2), but fsck.ext2 has never failed to repain them and rescue my data.

its formatted to ntfs, but i think it suffered some severe physical damage. ^^; 50 of those 80gigs were mp3's. *rams head into monitor*

There are companies that can get data off ruined HDs, but as far as I know its extremely expensive. Maybe thats something to look into for ya.

That's an odd pair of statements. Seems that "invaluable" < $500 in your book.

Anyway, I had data errors in my outlook.pst file, which was set to be a bit of a disaster, but Badcopy Pro fixed it. It's quite coo, because it's shareware. It will examine the files, and see if it can recover them. Only once it has assessed whether the file(s) can be recovered does it ask you to register.

I would say that if your 2.5" adapter doesn't work, you're probably screwed.
