Anyone watching the Daytona 500 this weekend will notice how worn the famous track looks. Cracks litter the racing surface and the Great American Race was even delayed so they could fill in a pothole. Because of that, NASCAR is going to resurface Daytona in the off-season (although, why they can't do it between the Daytona and the 6 Hour Grand-Am race, I have no idea.) Maybe they'll even re-surface the infield course. But it also looks like Daytona might become a concrete raceway, as all the patches appear to be made with concrete. It'll be cheaper in the long run, and would completely change the track. It will also get rid of the Sebring style bumps.

They mentioned a few times about resurfacing by next year. I'm not sure if it's for sure, but they seemed to talk about it a few times.

the track needs it regardless. I mean, it looks like an ally. It's scheduled to be repaved in 2012, but they could move it up, if needed, and it sounds like they might just do that. It was apparently last repaved in 1978, so it's far overdue for a fresh set of concrete/asphalt.

Yeah, and a 1hr 40min red flag period to fix the track doesn't exactly pump up the excitement.

agreed. and they had 5 races including a 24 hour race within two weeks. And it won't be the last time this year they'll have heavy cars racing on a deteriorating surface. And all those cars are going to do is make the surface worse. And long delays are not a good way to boost ratings. It's going to be a while before there's another race on that track this year, might as well fix it now, or they can wait until the off-season but two months isn't a long time to fix a 2 1/2 mile oval.
