DC and Alonso?

David Coulthard hit out at Renault's Fernando Alonso over the incident that saw the McLaren driver crash out of the European Grand Prix here on Sunday. Coulthard was challenging Alonso for fourth place entering the closing stages of the 60-lap race, but crashed out at high-speed after the Spaniard appeared to brake early going into the chicane.

The McLaren driver was forced onto the grass to avoid a collision and then hurtled across the gravel trap and into retirement.

"He braked much earlier than he had on the previous laps and it was definitely questionable," said Coulthard. "It was very difficult for me to do anything else and it was a problem. I'd like to have another look at it and it'll be interesting to see exactly what the telemetry says. I was on a bit of a charge and I think I could have got past him. I think he's an inexperienced driver and this sort of incident shows how much he has to learn."

Alonso, however, refused to accept responsiblity for Coulthard's exit after being questioned by stewards after the race. The Renault driver, who held on to take fourth place despite being caught by Ferrari's Michael Schumacher, insisted that any early braking was simply the result of technical problems on his car rather than a bid to upset Coulthard's challenge.

" The stewards wanted to know what happened," said Alonso. "I told them I was having a few problems and slowed down a bit earlier on that lap. But there were no serious problems with the tyres or the car. David got a bit too close to me I think."

Alonso was backed by Renault team principal Flavio Briatore, who added: "Alonso was a bit slower but it was nothing serious. Coulthard tried to pass him and got too near and he lost it. There was nothing wrong with Fernando's car. He drove a great race and we are very happy with the result."

What do you guys think? I personally have to side with Coulthard more on this one. Although I think it was both drivers fault. Alonso shouldn't of breaked so early, but nowhere does it say he can't. DC said he had made a rookie mistake, but when he himself has raced for so long, you would think he would be able to make a better decision do to experience.

I'm somewhere in the middle on this one.

While Alonso shouldn't have braked so early going into the corner, I think that if he was going to slow down that that would have been an especially dangerous spot to do so(As evidence by Coulthard's losing control). It probably would have been better if he had slowed down and pulled off line on the front straight but he was only defending his position.

DC on the other hand could not tell just how far slowed down Alonso was. I think this had to do more in part to not being able to judge the distance. Maybe if DC had slowed down somewhat or Alonso had not chosen to slow down early at that specific spot it would not have happened. I'm not really sure though.

I said when I was watching it that Alonso had braked earlier than previously. Remember though he had nearly gone off there. It was unfortunate that Alonso moved to cover his line and started braking just as DC was takign the line for his passing manoeuvre. Also, a couple of laps earlier in the final turn, I'm sure that Alonso brake-tested DC, because you clearly see DC with all four wheels locked up at a point where he should have been on the throttle.

There's going to be some nonsense between these two I think.

Agree on the brake test, although I do wonder if the Renault wasn't suffering some sort of front end issue - it seemed to be okay getting power to the ground, but he went in deep into a few corners.

I think David got sucked into the spin - Alonso did move to the middle of the track, but to my eyes stayed there - there was an opportunity to go down the outside.

Given the number of times Alonso braked early, I'd have thought David would have got the hint to be wary - I really have doubts about DC having his wits about him when he races.

That said - Alonso has been involved in a couple of 'interesting' events this year - Brazil comes to mind - a touch of the early Michael Schumachers about him, methinks...

i dont know where to stand in this incident. to some extent, both drivers were at fault.

still you gotta admit, it was a kool incident. i thought DC was gonna roll it for a second.
