I have tonight made a backup of not just my game saves but the whole system backup aswell to an external 500GB drive with the very latest 3.56 system and latest GT5 updates and my progress.

My UK release date fat 60gb card reader ps3 is getting a bit tempramental and theres a good offer to trade my old one in for a brand new slim, not to mention the half power consumption which for as long as i play would be great!

Ive read many people had success transferring from one ps3 to another using both systems at the same time but if i do this trade-in i wont have the luxury of them side by side.

can i restore my backup onto the new ps3 and just be on my way or will it not be so straightforward as this? im going to make sure i double save my game data too just in case though. but im more concerned about losing my 6 stealth car pack too. As this is replacing my old one ill obviously be using the same PSN ID and would like to format my old one before it leaves me.

hope someone can clear this up for me so i can get a new slim and continue my gamesave progress (50 gold licenses as of tonight woo, only S license to go) without fear of freezing and glitching.

Many thanks :)

managed to transfer my game save and my stealth cars fine, except lost a few thumbnails in my garage, dont know if my trophies system still works as i havent done anything to warrant a new trophy yet.

thanks for all the help and re assurance [/sarcasm]

If you refresh or create a new thumbnale, isn't that get those losted pictures back to garage, I read it about somewhere here and succesfully doing it too.

You can definitely create the thumbnails for the cars.

Highlight the car
Press Triangle
Create thumbnail.

Yeap its straight forward, when you get the new console, make a user with the exact same name as you used to the old console.
Sign in to PSN, using the "existing account" and you are good to go and restore the data.
***Note*** before giving away your old console, remember to deactivate it from your profile.

XMB>>Playstation Network>>System Activation

Even if you loose them (that you wont) you can re-download them from PS Store.
Go to PSStore at the upper right corner>>"View Download list" browse till you find them and press download.

Forgive me for being dumb here, im new to the PS3 system.

Say you change PS3's for what ever reason (breakdown etc)
Can you just do a straight swap of the harddrives and be good to go? Or is it not that simple?

The reason i ask is that it seems that some people around here are having trouble backing up their PS3's to EX HD's due to copy protected material.
Just curious.

no the PS3 hard drive data is motherboard locked, so if you put the drive in a new PS3 it just prompts you to format it to use it.

The thumbnail refresh worked ive got them all back now. My trophies work as i just golded nascar school and got the trophy for it. My stealth cars i re downloaded from PSN they just installed straight back on. I did lose my replays and pics but thats the only thing and not bothered about.

I did lose my copyrighted data but that was just NFS shift and dantes inferno completed game saves. So EA must lock all their games up.

All in all successful transition from original 60gb fat to 320gb PS3 slim yay
