Well its pretty much decided than when i get the fundage (somehow) i am moving up north. wayyyy north. Im currently in Michigan and i plan to say goodbye to the mitten. and hello biggest state in the US!

I am gonna go with my best friend, back home to AK.

He is a commercial helicopter pilot and is just back here to visit his parents and get a grant so he can start his own business.

anyways im gonna go back with him possibly. AK has Jobs and MI doesnt.

How this alll pretains to cars in general.

I am taking my Fiero.

But i will need a vehicle more suited for the weather.
(I will be rent free, just needing to pay half the bills he owns his own house. FYI)

Tom (my friend) Has an H3, but his Parents have a Volvo.

I really like both. yet im stuck deciding between a Volvo and a Hummer.

I really like both. (and i need AWD or 4WD)

The XC90 is really nice

But i as well like the S80

or i could go another route and get an Audi A5

But then again theres the old standby Hummer H3 Alpha (the alpha has a V8 so better gas mileage).

Im not really sure which one to get i kinda want good gas mileage which kinda throws the hummer off except the Alpha gets better than the H3X and .

yet the hummer costs less than the others.

its a real tough decision. my friend Tom will be helping me but at the same time

im lookin at about 40K for the Hummer and 50 for the Volvo and 50 for the audi (i did price some out, but of course you cant help but max it out lol)

so any ideas? anyone had personal experience with volvo? audi? hummer?

Volovs are great in the snow i know that.

i dunno im soooo confused!

wahhh

I'd go with the standard H3, with the 5-cylinder and 5-speed, adventure package, and of course an engine block heater. ;)

Haha I'll bet! Will the city you'll be in be bigger like Anchorage or a smaller, more remote place? Also, the Alpha gets worse mpg than the H3X (Alpha 13/16 vs H3/H3X 14/18...not much better but still ever so slightly!)

true true! i will be just outside of Anchorage, Eagle River, its like 10-20 outside of Anchorage.

Or a Legacy, for that matter. I'm confused to what you are looking for, because you have a very wide range of cars there.

i dunno really what im looking for, i love hummers, audis and volvos. well in all honestly i love Lamborghinis, koenigsegg's and Ferraris. BUTTT im thinking practical, but a little more classy. but not BMW or Mercedes. i need AWD or 4WD and i like something that looks good. I really like teh styling on the S80, XC90, and the A5. and a hummer has ALWAYS tickeled my fancy. im not much a fan of Subaru unless its an Impreza. as well I definitely am not in the mood for a December to remember at my local Lexus dealer.

EDIT: on the plus, if i go hummer, i get a GM discount through my grandpa.

EDIT#2: also im hindered by my inability to drive a stick. i never learned. never had anyone to teach me, and when i tired it I smoked a clutch, but it was a bad car to learn on. so no stick, auto only.

You like Imprezas? Get an STI! You can learn to drive stick. You can't just give up the first time when you drive a beater with a worn out clutch.

To be honest, if you go Hummer, you would get so many discounts you wouldn't even want to bring up your grandpa's GM discount. They'd probably give you $4k just for walking in the door. Sales down 65% last month & will be worse this month.

Ok, this makes no sense. You don't want a BMW or Mercedes because you need something 4WD/AWD, yet you might think of wanting the Audi A5?

FYI, BMW & Mercedes do offer some great AWD cars, but like the A5 Quattro-equipped model (which is what I hope you're looking at), won't be anything like other AWD systems or Quattro-equipped Audi's.

It's Alaska, can you even get a Mercedes or BMW properly served up there? And it does make sense why one wouldn't want one for artic weather.

I'd try the Hummer first since it will be almost as cost with deals and cash back. With Alaska you are going to want something with a good amount of ground clearance and enough power and torque to get through and tricky parts outside of the city which I assume isn't really plowed that much. I've only ever met a couple people from Alaska and they all owned big 4x4 trucks....and I mean the biggest ones you could get.

Hands down you're going to want that A5. Do you get the 3.0 TDI? Fine car that.

It's bad everywhere though. I know of a Renault dealership in Rotterdam that will throw in a free Twingo with the purchase of an Espace.

everyone rules! i love the great advice, (even with my crazy mind) and i did not think about the fact that GM is in the hole billions of dollars and they would practically give me an H3 just to get my business.

Im really leaning towards the H3.

also if GM went under and took GMAC financial with them...... would i still have to pay?

Andddd one day when i strike it rich, i will be like a ton of other home owners in AK, and ill buy a Lamborghini. granted ill only be able to drive it 6 weeks out of the year but hell. who cares! you see a TON of exoctics up there.

You don't like Subarus, but I think you should still seriously consider one of these:

I hear Anchorage used to be the Scooby capitol of the country before the SUV boom, so there must me something about them that makes them work there.

No, it really doesn't. He doesn't want a BMW or Mercedes because of the conditions, yet he wants an Audi A5, a car which is about as well known for off Alaska-like conditions as any BMW xDrive-equipped model.

First off he is a she per the profile.

Also I don't think an Audi S5 is a good idea either, like I said based on what I've been told about living in Alaska from the few people I've met, you are going to want something that sits up higher then low slung car due to the snow.

Also as I've said, how easy would it be to get a BMW, Audi, or Mercedes serviced in Alaska? There is one BMW dealership in the entire state and I have to assume MB is the same way (their site makes me install something I can't do right now).

Out of all the choices something domestic, 4WD, and high ground clearance seems to be the best bet...which happens to be the H3.

That, and they're built surprisingly well, seem to be pretty reliable, and will be hard-pressed to get stuck anywhere up in the Alaskan wilderness. The only other alternative that I can think of?

Jeep Wrangler Rubicon Unlimited. Strong power. Unbeatable performance off-road. Certainly less than $40,000 as well.

Eh the power isn't that strong. Many people complained that the V6 doesn't feel as powerful as the I6 that it replaces. It does indeed have great off-road performance though. The best model would be the Sahara, with it's shift-on-the-fly 4WD and traction control/ESP versus the Rubicon's off-road orriented transfer case and electronic locking differentials.

hehe me being a she is correct. lol and i am leaning towards the H3. in the carbon or red. i like the red but the carbon may show less dirt i dunno

either way, H3 is the route im going a hot chick in a hummer haha
