I have always been interested in these kind of games but do not game on a PC and was not aware of any console MMO so I may have to give this one a go, looks really good.

I am just surprised it is free to play. I was not interrested until I heard that. Looks like an MMO version of Borderlands. I am quite excited for this.

Free to play? This means no subscription (monthly etc) I'm guessing. That is good news, here's hoping to my new favorite franchise!

That is correct. No monthly payments to play this MMO. Otherwise I would not be interrested. But free to play is a great idea!

Defiance: Advanced Mission Beta 3 Details

We are proud to announce the third Defiance Beta weekend which will take place on PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3! Our Advanced Mission Beta 3 release will be NDA FREE! So feel free to talk about Defiance on our official forums here once Advanced Mission Beta 3 is live!

Note: The Alpha NDA is still in place and content around Alpha will remain under NDA until further notice.

Advance Mission BETA 3 Dates:
PlayStation 3 North America: March 19th 8:00am PDT – March 25th 9:00p, PDT
PlayStation 3 Europe: March 20th 8:00am PDT – March 26th 9:00p, PDT
PC Global: March 22nd 9:00am PDT – March 24th 9:00pm PDT
Xbox 360 Global: March 25th 8:00am PDT – March 26th 9:00pm PDT

The final beta, which is not representative of the final game, will let players explore the Mt. Tam and Madera regions with Co-op battles on Angel Island and the Cronkhite Bunker. For Ark Hunters looking to test their might in some competitive multiplayer action, the Freight yard and Observatory will provide opportunities to prove themselves worthy of Von Bach Industries’ recruitment.

Thanks to a partnership with Dodge, we revealed last week that players pre-ordering Defiance will also get an exclusive in-game red Dodge Challenger at launch, in addition to the previously announced pre-order reward items. The Dodge Challenger is the fastest vehicle in the game and players in the BETA will get to test drive it first by competing in the Dodge time trial challenge located in Madera.

Defiance is scheduled for release April 2, 2013, and is now available for pre-order. If you’re looking for a guaranteed invite to the final BETA you can get your key by pre-ordering now.

Also! PC players can now pre-order their copy of Defiance from Steam here: http://store.steampowered.com/app/224600.

Why do they emphasize free to play? every game i buy is free to play online once i've bought it? Its the minmum i'd expect, See that bottle of cola, Well its free to drink once you've payed for it.

Its an MMO. Most MMO games are not free to play online. There is usually a monthly fee. So it makes perfect sense for them to emphasize free to play. In fact free to play is the ONLY reason I am even interrested in this game. If there was a monthly fee I would not be interrested at all.

This is an hour long video that pretty much has me 95% set on pre-ordering the game. The beta is next week for 360 players so that will make or break the game for me. This video tells a LOT about the game.

You can pre-order free games now? Was this a mistake or is that seriously, actually a thing?

Also free to play is not necessarily a good thing, yes it means you can try the game for yourself, but if it's handled badly (APB: Reloaded, Real Racing 3, countless other examples) you pretty much have to pay, a lot, to be competitive. If it's handled well (Simraceway, Blacklight: Retribution, Planetside 2) then you should be able to get a lot of enjoyment out of it without any real money expenditure. PS2, for example, only lets you use real money for aesthetic mods and weapons as far as I recall. Blacklight lets you hire weapons for a day with one or two games' worth of in-game currency and Simraceway only sells cars, and if you don't have a car you just can't race. It's relatively easy to earn credits to buy cars with, too, and if you win enough real money from racing you can cash it out which is pretty awesome (even if I'll never actually make any money from it).

Just saying.

Yes we have always been able pre order games. If you pre-order Defiance you get a guaranteed code to the beta. I havent pre-ordered yet but I signed up with the site and got in. This will be my 16th beta.

You dont have to be competitive in Defiance. Its a co-op game. It has co-op OR competitive. I am mainly planning on playing this as a co-op. Have you watched ANY of the videos I posted???? Its a co-op MMO.

Again, this is great news Defiance is free to play online. No monthly fees.

My point is how do you pre-order a game that's free? That's marketing gone mad, like launch trailers that come out weeks before the game launches or gameplay trailers that show bugger all gameplay.

Have you watched ANY of the videos I posted???? Its a co-op MMO.

No, I didn't have to to make my point. Besides, I have no interest in this game whatsoever, mainly because it's free to play and F2P games that get the economy just so are rare. Personally I'd rather just play the demo then if I like it, pay £30-40 and get everything in one go, rather than potentially £100+ to get it in a steady drip-feed.

Anyway, even in a co-op game, if you're the weak link in the team because you haven't bought gear you're still uncompetitive. Like playing Killing Floor on Hard, Suicidal or Hell on Earth as a level 1 Berzerker, everyone just thinks you're an idiot who will get everyone killed.

Again, this is great news Defiance is free to play online. No monthly fees.

I don't know why you think saying 'again' makes it any truer than the first time, it's still potentially a false economy and you won't know until you try it, unless you do already know how it works? Genuine question, I'm not trying to be facetious. The lack of monthly fees is good but if you end up spending more through buying gear, where's the benefit?

Have you played any F2P games before?

Edit: Honestly, I'm really not trying to be condescending, even though it may sound that way.

The game isn't free, it's a full retail game. That's why people are finding it odd they're promoting it as free online.

Ehhhhh? Now I'm seriously confused. I shall now do some research.

So it seems that what CAMAROBOY meant was that it's not free to play, it just doesn't have subscription fees, but does still have microtransactions. Is that right?

Free to play is a whole business model, I'm not sure if it has hit consoles yet (well, not the 360 anyway, the PS3 now has Uncharted 3 MP F2P and Dust 415 might be F2P as well?) but we've had free to play PC games for a while now. If you have to pay money to access a game it's not free to play, subscription fees or not.

So this is in fact worse than a F2P model.

I am moving on. You guys are just being silly.

Looking forward to checking out this beta tonight and over the weekend. It will make or break the game as a rental or purchase. Hopefully the beta runs smooth but my expectations are not high.

I am moving on. You guys are just being silly.

Yeah, we're the silly ones. I can't speak for SimonK but when a game costs money AND asks me to pay for existing content (i.e. not just DLC, content that comes with the game), I lose interest immediately. You may not and that's fair enough, of course, but you have to admit it's an 'interesting' business model.

Well most mmorpg are on that model. Let's take wow or FF11 for example which I played. First you gotta buy the game itself, then you pay a monthly fee and a big part of the gamers will buy gold/gil or even full set of armor to speed things up. The only difference with a game with micro transaction implented, is that the money that gamers use to buy gold/gil or full set of armor in wow/ff11 goes to shaddy group in china/korea/usa. Apparently some of those group are link to the maffia/triade so I guess it's better that developpers include micro transaction so they can benefit from that money instead of unknow people.

Defiance is still not "Free to play" as the thread title implies though. If you have to buy it, you're paying to play it, even if the ongoing costs aren't there as in other MMO.

I will change the title so some of you sleep better tonight.
Anyway, my beta is downloaded. Took about 30 minutes which is shocking considering it is over 5 gb in size.

It was explained in the first post and in all the videos I posted that the online play is free but whatever. Are you in the beta?? Mine is already downloaded for the 360 but I am at work and cant play until tonight.

Actually, Free to Play game already existed on PS3 since last year, Gundam Battle Operation, it's free to download and play online. Everyday you are given certain credits to play that recharge every 2 or 4 hours if not mistaken. If you play quite a lot, you can buy credit recharge ,that's where the money comes in. I played for about a month or so, free of course as I spent around an hour or 2 every day, never used up my credits.

I tried for about 2 hours to get into the beta with no luck. I keep getting the sign in error. I think it might be because I have my online and communication preferences set to friends only. The same issue prevented me from playing the TW14 demo online with others. So I might try to adjust that today and see if it lets me into the beta.
edit: still not working.

I tried on and off all weekend and could not connect to this 360 beta AT ALL. Kept getting the sign in error. My friend tried in Europe tried about 100 times and got in twice. Out of the 16 betas I have attended, this beta was handled the worst. From my experience, this is a sign of a game that is going to have major problems at launch. So with that said, I will NOT be buying this game at launch. I will wait until the community gets their hands on the game and provides feedback. Its almost guaranteed to have some major day one problems with a beta handled this poorly.

I got this game at launch and am liking it a lot. I do have one problem. On my slim ps3 the game keeps hard crashing were I have to press power button for 15 seconds to make it shut down. Anyone else with this game having the same issue

I rented Defiance. The first few days of this game were terrible especially on the 360. But after Friday and quite a few patches, it has been working really really well. I am considering buying it now if the problems have been worked out. We all know games have launch issues but I am shocked how fast they fixed this game.

From what I heard us europe PS3 users had a pretty good time compare to 360 NA users. Also the defiance website has a comunity tab that is updated almost daily as to the progress of fixes. Its an easy thing to do but many games companies do it. Only other thing i dont like of this is the shockingly high price of bits and the amount need for new gear it can cost about £7 for a new outfit!

I thought the patches for TDU2 were huge but wow just wow. Look at this list. Very impressed with how fast they are working to fix the bugs in the game. I have never seen a developer respond this fast.
