Deformed, defective music CD's?

I got a new CD over the weekend. I am cheap I use my PS2 as a CD player and DVD player. So I put the new CD in and the PS2 starts making these horrible sounds. I am thinking "oh great, it's broken." But then I try a DVD and it plays fine. Then I try another CD and it plays fine. Then I try GT3 and it loads fine. Then I try the new CD again and it makes the horrible noises. So I exchange the CD for a new one and it, too, won't play, and makes the PS2 sound terrible. A third replacement does the same thing. So then I dig out my old crappy CD player from the garage and it plays in that just fine.

Does anyone have any effing clue why this one music CD will not play when everything else plays fine?

yep..i have the same problem....some CDs wont play...you get a horrible scratchy sound coming from the drive as if the CD is jammed inside.....and this also true of some PS1 games for me....others will play fine and others make this horrible sound....i'm stumped...neither the discs or the drives seem damaged before or after the event.

Hmm. It could be one of these copy-protected CDs.

Can you play it in your computer? Is it a BMG release?

I haven't tried it in my computer yet, but I imagine it will work. I was convinced that the CD was somehow subtley mis-shapen, or too thick, but a close comparison shows it is fine. TS's description of the sound is right on.

It's an Electra release.

Does it have any multimedia information on it, meant to be played on a computer? That usually gives my Winamp and WMP fits. It either won't run in WMP, or it won't list up the artist and songs, or it won't copy the last track to my hard drive.

Maybe because it is dual-layered, and you have an old PS2? (by old I mean, on the SCHP-35000/30000/35001 range)

Dont feel so bad about the multi-use. I use my PS2 as a cd player and DVD player too.

EDIT: Bah, crap, I dont think they do dual-layered cd's. That was a stupid guess. Maybe you are close to get a DRE!

It is old. I traded PS2's with my father-in-law because his old one played burned DVD's and my newer one didn't, and he records shows for my wife.
