Deleted WINDOWS File...

Hey. It's Zach again. I haven't been on in a few days because our computer has been down...

We are probably going to have someone rescue some data like my music and my mom's files...

I cam here to ask you guys about what to do. The missing file is C\WINDOWS\system32\Config

I don't know what to do. I want to just reformat. My mom is worried about losing programs and files....

I am at the library now... I will be back tomorrow. Gonna browse around and go home....

When I left, my mom said I was having withdrawal symptoms.. :(

Thanks in advance! :)

Well - Unless you're having someone make a backup of the disc, a reformat will certainly cause you to lose just about everything....

Besides - \windows\system32\config is a directory which contains, as the name says, all Windows' config files - and that being missing is NOT a good thing.. So I fear that you'll get your format soon...

Yes i wouldn't consider formatting without mentioning it to your mum that you will indeed lose all unbackedup data.

An alternative is to do an OS repair. You should have a repair cd that came with the computer or i guess standard windows disks offer this option too. You may lose your programs, but you'll keep all other data.

if you have another computer or have a friend with a big enough hard drive you could take yours out and possibly back up data that you have.

Hmmmmmmmm... my mom knows what will happen. She knows.... done it before.....

Anyways, I did the original OS disc.... but I don't know what to do.

Is there a special repair disc I should have gotten?

I can't wait to get it fixed. BTW, we have only used approximately 15GB. Maybe more, maybe less.

I don't know about any other Windows versions, but the XP installation disc has a repair option. Just put in the CD, restart the computer and press a key when it asks you to boot from the CD. Then just follow the prompts until it gives you the option of repairing Windows.

get someone else using a silimar operating system (pre win 2k pc's used FAT32, and 2k onwards used NTFS). get a computer whizz (moi) to install your hard drive as a slave, and simply copy any needed files, then head for a format. also do this if youre repairing as you 'might' lose some wanted files

I wouldn't describe a simple hard disk swap as being a computer whizz :P and that idea's already been covered, but it is a good one.

So hold on, Zach, how did this file go missing? Did you whoopsy-daisily delete it?

i wrote that in assumption that he didnt know how to plug it and jumper it as slave, and was a computer newbie. sure its easy when you know what to do :)

Well,I think it might have been system mechanic 5. Anyways, I know to do what chinko said. But, it is getting my parents to comply. They think I am a retard when it comesto these things.

get sometime when theyre not in. make sure the other PC is nearby. if you start as soon as they leave then the data transfer will only take a few mins, then the format can take anything from half an hour to an hour

going behind their back would, in effect, make me a retard.

:dunce:

Oh well, all fixed. SO MUCH FASTER!1!!

Oh well. All good. Got AVG and PS@. YAY!
