Drivers who 'dent and run' are costing British motorists £5 billion a year. A survey carried out by eBay shows that 22 million drivers have returned to their cars to find damage inflicted by another car and no note left with the offender's details.
The research shows that dent-and-run is an increasing problem in the UK, and costs each victim an average of £340. Sports cars, MPVs and SUVs are the most likely to be damaged, and the cost of fixing these vehicles is also the highest, with parking dent repairs costing as much as £700.
The most common forms of damage caused by dent-and-run drivers are paint scratches, damage to door mirrors, dented bumpers, smashed headlights and dented body panels. The survey shows that half of all British drivers would not leave a note or any details if they damaged another car while parking, and those who've done it offered excuses ranging from 'I was in a hurry and had no pen' to 'I was worried about my no-claims bonus'. More than half (56%) said they would take down the registration number of a car they saw causing damage. Women emerge from the survey as better at parking than men, with 10% of female drivers causing damage when parking, while 17% of men have been guilty.
The research also shows that where you live has a bearing on how likely you are to leave your details after causing damage. Londoners are twice as likely as the national average to drive off without leaving a note. Londoners are also the worst at parking, with 30% of the capital 's drivers admitting to damaging another car while squeezing into a space. The national average is 10%.
Half of all British drivers say they've been involved in a dent-and-run incident, and those driving a large SUV are most likely to be the culprits, with one in five damaging another car while reversing or opening a door. This compares with one in ten estate car drivers.
