Depressing car show

Today I went to a car show in town from 11 to 2 o'clock. At first I thought it would be cool to see all the muscle cars and everything, but I quickly ran into a bunch of kids from my high school, and all there cars were tuners with over 5 grand put in each. I started feeling depressed because all I have is an Camaro, and those aren't too popular in my school, and you can't make those into tuners. Also, I don't have the money to build a tuner myself.

Why can't one make a Camaro into a tuner? They make parts for them, and they are absurdly easy to get power out of.

Don't feel bad buddy.
The Camaro is a capable car with great potential.
Keep your aspirations of tuning in mind and stick with the Camaro. When you've got the cash to make tuning happen I'm willing to bet you will get more out of your money than the import tuner crowd. 👍

If I was going to tune a car with bang for the buck in mind, I'd definately consider something like a Camaro.
Exhaust, suspension, just about anything is availible, all you've got to do is look around. :D

So what!? GNX's, AZ1's, or Beats aren't popular here, but I want one. Just rent out a drag strip and race all those ricers.

They don't race there cars, they take 'em to car shows. It's depressing seeing 10th & 11th graders with carbon-fibre hoods, 3 grand stereo systems, expensive hydraulics, TV's replacing the back seats, Body kits & alot of times, racing engines, in there cars, and all I have is a crappy v6 camaro that won't ever be able to be like those things.

Hmmm..... Chevrolet 350 V8 290 hp.

How expensive would that be? Should be able to smoke any ricer tuner.

EDIT: If you wanna stay V6... the 3800 Series III is 260 hp...

Yeah, but the thing is, they aren't popular around here, dropped S-10s and Imports are. BTW, it's an '88.

w00t! Dropped S-10's FTW!

But really you have an 88 Camaro, it's begging for an engine swap, you should be able to pick up a decent 350 for good price. Also it shouldn't be overly hard to do if you have a few people to give you a hand.

Just so you know, I doubt that any of them actually use those things, they're more for show than anything else.

So what exactly do YOU want from your car? Plan it out, save money, do it. That's a lot more satisfying than using mommy and daddy's chequebook.

So?

It doesn't take money to make a car quick and handle well. It takes knowledge and elbow grease. Find a forum for your car's generation. Find out the hot parts that can be had for cheap from other Camaros, and start hitting the U-pull-it yards. Replace that bent fender or cracked bumper. Fix all the little broken stuff and score a nicer set of seats for it. Keep an eye an Craigslist for a snappy used set of wheels. Polish it. Get a used 350 (should be readily available under $500) and a book on how to rebuild small block Chevies (SBC). Put the engine on a stand in your shed and rebuild it while you're driving the V6. Then, swap it in with help from somebody who's done it. There are 'grassroots motorfans' all over that will lend a hand to help a new enthusiast. Hook up with your local Corvette or Classic Chevies club - I bet they've got room for a kid with a Camaro who wants to make it nice.

There were about 8 million of your car made - good parts will be plentiful and cheap. Who cares if everybody else has daddy's credit card and no imagination? Kick their asses on the cheap.

Duke, I'd +rep you for that if I could right now :P

I think part of the depression is these kids making show cars with their parents' money. Its kinda frustrating when you have some kid show up with an STi daddy bought him or something like that - which happened at an autocross/drift once. Was a total ass, cocky as hell, and it was clear he didn't have to buy tires. He is black listed from the events now after he almost went out of the parking lot into the highway...

You can do amazing things if you take the time and effort... and for dirt cheap. I got a full interior from an MR2 for about.. 60 dollars, including seats at a local junkyard. Engines go for less than a 100 sometimes, if you pull it yourself. Camaro's aren't hard to get power out of, and they can look pretty damn nice too.

Those kids with their Civics and dad's money will have problems if they ever deal with a real car guy, because they stand out like a sore thumb. Sure, they might have cool cars for High School... but high school is about the dumbest thing on earth. Just a giant pointless popularity contest. So eff em and eff their cars is what I say. Do your own thing. Smart people will respect you more for it.

lol just because all the sheepy kids are doing it doesnt mean its cool :p
small block idea sounds perfect, will do literally :p while all their rollerskates can fart around yours can make some noise and some power to back it up
and youl be hard finding an ego happy kid who blows their parents money and has a shred of driving skill :p
