Hello gents, I'm embarking on a treacherous path. I want to build myself a cockpit for cheap. I'm going to list a few materials and features, and have you guys help me narrow down what should be used. Also you can choose more than one choice, so please put your vote in. Options 1 through 7 are materials I could use while options 8 to 11 are features I am thinking of including. Option 12 would be a last resort. Thank you for your time and votes. If you have the time post, but also for those guys who are just viewing, I'd appreciate it if you would make your voice known and vote, because every vote counts.

EDIT: So far this is what I've got from a friend. This is a mock up of an MDF rig. I did find a passenger seat from a BMW E36 on Kijiji. I'm hoping to get a good price on it. Anyway here's the mock up.

EDIT: A new concept and mock up. This time in 1" square stock. The shifter and wheel supports can go on either side of the seat.

If you are wondering what program I'm using for these it is Google SketchUp.

which materials would be easiest for you to get, cheapest, easiest to work with?

You put 1" steel tube as an option so I assume you have or have access to a welder? It would be the most stable (I made one myself last month) but more expensive and time consuming than most. Here's mine (not the best looking as I wasn't going for it, took about an hour to do) :

Total cost is $160 (100 for the seat and 60 for material)

Go with what you're most comfortable working with. Different designs require different materials so not much point putting this to vote when you haven't mentioned what style of cockpit you're after. If your design brief is simply "cheap" then the probable outcome will be that your spending goes way over budget and the build takes far too long due to oversights from lack of experience in planning and materials.

That looks great. Do you have many more photos? It's just about exactly what I want, but I'd like to be a bit higher off the ground.

Yeah, I was trying to replicate the F1 driving position so that's why the seat so low. If you want it to be higher, just make a U-shape tube and raise the seat up. The only thing I would change about mine is the wheel support tube (it gets in the way sometimes). When I have time, I'd cut that out and put 2 on the sides instead (if you heel toe shift, this is a must). Here's some more pictures:

If you want more, please be specific and I'll take some more
