Desktop Themes

100% free. Unzip the file. Run the .exe file and follow the on screen instructions. After its done you'll restart and be able to start using custom themes. The themes go in C:\WINDOWS\Resources\Themes. To select the theme go into Display Properties. If the theme has a .theme file, look under Themes. If it doesn't look under Appearance and go to where it says "Windows and buttons" to select it. I hope I explained it ok for you.

A simple search would have turned up all the info you need, including a thread started by me listing quite a few good themes.

I use http://www.themexp.org/. To be able to use them, you need to download Style XP 2.0, which is a fairly decent program. All the instructions to install them are found here.

Just a little word of advice - if you download a theme from themexp.org, and it's an .exe instead of a .zip file, do not execute it, as it installs gumph on your PC like add-ons for IE before you get to see the .zip and the files you need.

I didn't know deviantART had some themes. I'll certainly have a look at them.

Does anyone know where you can simply get .theme files without having to use any programs...... I have the windows media center royale theme just as a .theme file...... bang it in with the other windows ones and activate it in display properties... simple...

.theme files are just config files essentially. They simply contain what visual style (.msstyles, the actual things that skin the taskbar and windows, etc...), wallpapers and cursors to apply. No doubt the Microsoft Royale theme included an actual visual style. Unfortunately, an unpatched Windows XP will only let you use visual styles digitally signed by Microsoft. So, no, unless you find some Microsoft themes, you can't get away with themeing your XP without either:

a) patching the uxtheme.dll to allow unsigned third party visual styles
b) using a skinning program like Windowblinds

This should make your life a lot easier than a stupid patch.

Type in what you need to, to download it.

Then unzip it.

Go to what ever site you want to download a visual style you want.
(Like in deviantArt, you would go to Categories -> Skins and Themes -> Windows Utilities -> Visual Styles.

Download, unzip where ever you want the file to go to, and then open up styler, and drag that from the location where the visual style was, to the ' Theme ' part of the Styler.

Pretty simple rather than the patch where you need to always get to a folder.

Just a word of warning from me:

If you are going to use Windows Blinds, or Desktop X, make sure that you can support the correct resolution, if not your computer gets all loopy on it! :scared:

I normally use a mac, but have a PC too for various reasons. Never even thought of these themes, but it's great! Downloaded Style XP and some visual styles. Cooool... Now the PC looks like mac! 👍
