So what I know is you can mod a PS3 controller as a button box and use it with GT5. Can you also use a controller and wheel at the same time for other PS3 racers too?

So technically I can also wire up a home made sequential shifter and handbrake from a PS3 controller to use with GT5 or other games right? I cannot see why it would not work.

I have been looking at some videos and see people hacking their wheels to do a shifter or brake. Why not just hack up an old controller and use it for that instead of opening your wheel up? Just plug it in another USB slot and that's it. I would rather not open the wheel and solder and drill and run wires from the wheel itself. I've been looking and I can't seem to find someone that made a stand alone unit for GT5 or others. Or maybe I somehow missed it.

I have an original DF, DFP, and DFGT. I see aftermarket PS3 and USB controllers all the time at the flea market for dirt cheap. Thanks for your input guys!

I've not tested it but I'm quite sure GT is unique in allowing a wheel and controller to control one car at the same time, hence why people tend to mod the wheel rather than the controller.

I was planning on building my own GT5 button box but shortly after starting I bought myself a G27 and a PC, so I kind of lost interest... It was going to have quite a few nice features too, like one-touch RA menu toggles for instance.

Oh I see. That that should explain it then. That is a disappointment because if I can build something that can be used with all games it would feel more worth it. I don't have a gaming capable PC so that is out of the question to use it on that. Heck, it can't even run RBR that I just bought =(

My plan was to take a controller and do a shifter, brake, and a little button box with the remaining buttons. I do love GT5 and with 6 around the corner, maybe one day.

Thanks.

You could quite easily do the same with a DFP/GT, I've personally only opened up a DFP but the wiring to the buttons on the front is very simple; there are 8 wires which form a 4x4 matrix to give you the 16 buttons, so you can just get a normal 0.1" pitch female header, solder up your own matrix to it then unplug the wheel's buttons and plug your own in. You can get extra long lead female headers so you could even plug the original wheel buttons back in and have them working in parallel. That's about as far as I got with my mod.

The DFGT will more than likely be different though because of the (what I presume to be an) encoder wheel, there might be a serial/parallel converter inside the wheel itself to cut down on the number of wires required to run through the 'steering column', so I can't help you with that one.

Thanks for your help! It actually does not seem too hard at all. I have a ton of years working on R/C cars and a few DIY's here and there but never messed around in the gaming world. I would really like to use a setup for all games besides GT. I'm just trying to get the most out of console racing!

Cheers
