So, I've taken my DFGT apart a few times now to lube it up but it's still noisy as hell... I'm now giving up on trying to quiet down the straight-cut gears. My question is. Has anyone picked apart their wheel past this point?

If so, how did you split the gear housing? I've taken every single screw out and even took out the wheel to see if I was missing something on the other side. It barely budges. I can only wiggle it a very small amount but it won't pull apart. I'm trying to disassemble it to measure the gears and change the ratios (keeping the sensor's ratio the same of course) to add speed and take away strength from the FFB motor. While I'm at it, I'll make them helical gears too in hopes of reducing noise...

Your best bet would be moving this here.

They'll be able to help you better.

No worries, good luck with your project!

Figured it out after getting a little too aggravated...

Gently hit the bearing between the metal pieces holding it in.

You end up with this.

Every gear will be remade with helical cuts but only this one will be modified. The center will be smaller, the outer ring will be larger, and the FFB sprocket will be made smaller also. This will result in a longer ratio. I am still not sure as to how much longer I should make it though...

Friend of mine does CNC work. I may have these made out of some type of metal instead of plastic. I currently see no drawbacks, but, I guess weight could potentially be an issue unless I use aluminum but then aluminum for the gears probably wouldn't be a good idea.

There's still time to figure things out though. I just took it apart for measurements and yet another cleaning. The gears won't be made until maybe next month but I'll keep you guys in the loop. 👍

Metal should be fine for the gears. Mostly it will just sound different. :) Probably cooler... (as in, more awesome, not temperature)

However, the nice thing about nylon gears is that they are already "slick" and then lubed of coarse they are even slicker... However, the opposite is true of metal gears. You really need to keep them lubed. That would really be the only drawback of metal gears.

Don't use aluminum. You might look into Delrin or some other brand of acetal... These wear very well, are hard enough and slicker than snot. :) Best of all, it machines like a dream!

If needed, I could make a sealed "gear box". ;) That's a long shot though. If anything, I could probably use something like polished carbide and not worry about lubing. I'll just have to keep an eye out for dust and clean it regularly. Something I already do but the noise reduction would be well worth it. 👍
