Did GameStop rip me off?

I saw a copy of FF7 in box with manuals in a retail store for $170, my mate out of curiosity went in and asked how much he'd get for his copy (equal condition), he was told $20. I've heard similiar things about ICO on PS2, which are now selling online routinely for $100.

But yes, other than collectables/rarities, those old games are worth squat. I once traded 75 Sega Mastersystem games for about $2-$4 each.

I once saw a sealed copy of Final Fantasy 7 for the pc going for 999gbp. Bearing in mind that 999gbp is currently $1611 usd plus some change. It's funny because I only decided to check after I saw a sealed pc copy in a uk HMV for 4.99gbp. Would have bought it at the time but I didn't have a pc.

Here's a PSX copy going for almost $300 cad

PC copy going for 200 GBP

$1611 is taking the :cen: though. I know PC gamers tend to be purists and some love tweaking the settings to perfection (which is the very thing that eventually scared me away from pc gaming), but for that price, I'm sure even the most dedicated of PC gamers would prefer to buy a ps3, a really nice tv and download FF7 from the psn. As for ICO, I have a boxed copy with the manuals. Unfortunately, I bought a re-release copy. I could have bought a used original run copy in perfect condition at the time. I wonder how much the re-release copies are worth. If they are still around the same price I could be tempted seeing as how the hd version is just around the corner.

@F1 Fan - I was expecting around $5-$7 for all of those games. I mean, I wasn't expecting a motherlode, but I thought I would get more $$$ from those games. Corvette alone costed around $30 around late '06 - early '07 and that was a 3 year old game. so It would be around $10 - $12 in value today. I would expect 70 cents to $1.25 in trade-in credits.

I don't see the point in selling games when the value drops that low. You'd be better off holding on to them. If you were only expecting $5-7, then they didn't really "rip you off BIG time". Besides, they gave you a price, you said no. You still have the games and are free to sell or keep them. No one ripped anyone off.

It reminds me of the day GTA4 went on sale. I preordered months in advance only to be let down by the company I ordered from. In a panic, I preordered two copies from different online retailers days before release. Both arrived. Later that afternoon, I took one still sealed copy of the game into a store and heard they had sold out completely. I stood in the queue with about 10 people in front of me all waiting to ask the same question. When I got to the front of the line, I asked them how much they would give me for my copy and was told 25GBP. Considering that it was selling for 45gbp and was sold out on release day. I only paid 40 gbp for it and was hoping to get that much back.

I decided to keep the copy and as I was walking to the front of the store, a middle aged woman who was obviously there to try and buy the game for someone else came up to me and asked if she heard me say I had a spare copy. I said yes, and she offered me 70gbp, looking around to the small crowd of people who were approaching me. I told her I only wanted 40gbp for it, which she handed over and said thank you. At that point, a member of staff asked me to leave. I could understand his point if they had copies of the game for sale, but they didn't.

When was the last time you went into one of these stores? GameStop doesn't even take PS1 games anymore, let alone anything older than that.

I'm pretty sure they'll still take classics in good condition. If they can sell Final Fantasy 7 for $100 (and they can), but only buy it for $20, they'll be happy. A games store in glasgow had a copy in good condition or 30 GBP about a year ago. I remember thinking "what a rip off", but some people will go to great lengths to play such a classic game.

I wouldn't be surprised if boxed copies sell regularly for over $1000 in 10 or 20 years time. The only way to stop it happening would be for square to remake it and do it justice.

To the op, sorry for derailing the thread.

We don't have Gamestop here. But we do have a few major stores that still sell and trade 'Retro' gear and titles. N64, Dreamcast, PS1/2 SNES, NES. Pretty neat.

Gamestop is EBgames in disguise. Same group different name. Gametraders are pretty cool for those retro games but I wouldn't know what price they are purchasing all those old systems/games for. My guess is that they will offer very little just like EBgames.

Other way around I believe but yes.

They were two different companies, then shortly after I left my management job at GameStop they merged. (actually GameStop bought EB Games)

Do you have proof as to whether or not they'll accept copies of games like Final Fantasy 7? Could be classed as special circumstances.

Doesn't matter. They don't keep values for something like that in their system anymore. If you took a mint copy in for trade, chances are 99.99% that they'll turn you away. Unless the guy behind the counter wants to offer you money for it himself...
