I have just had my transmission rebulit on a 2001 KQ Ford Laser GLXi 1.8 Auto. (122,000 kms on the clock) The Transmission was trying to select 2nd and 3rd at the same time and was massivly slipping. It also burnt the Trans oil with-in 4 weeks of changing it. Also a mount or two perished when they pulled it off.

The bill at the end of it was $3,600.00 australian.

OMG, this has really hurt the credit card and my christmas.

Just wondering if any-one else has had to do a similar thing and how much it cost. (BTW, my knowledge on car repairs goes as far as petrol, water and air go in. If the car wont start, then it is broken. Call some-one to fix) :)

Edit: ooopps, maybe this should be in AskGTplanet instead

I will tell you this, its either you get ripped off by a unknown private shop or you pay a arm and a leg at a dealership.

I'm not even old enough for a car but I don't think that is too much of a rip off.

Maybe a little overpriced but like nk4e said, you will have to lose much more to get it done professionally.

According to google, that's around $2,300 usd.

Including the transmission itself, I'd say that price is around average, although getting anything done at a shop is overpriced.

That seems expensive to me. Modern ATX rebuilds are around US$1500 in the States for a common car. Of course, I'm not familiar with Aussie pricing even without the exchange rates, or your particular car.

I can tell you right now you got ripped. if the tranny went out that bloody early, it's a POS ( i believe it's a Mazda clone? *looks*yeah, it's a Familia with a blue oval badge!)

in the states this would be a "junkyard special"...it'd go straight to it at the first sign of trouble. it's also the kind over here that you can't get parts from for it anywhere BUT Japan :P

hmm...the bottom of the page says that the third gen US Escorts (from where our badge swap version got the name "tracer") are the same thing, built in Mexico. mabey it woulda been cheaper to buy and ship over a used US tranny :P

Sounds extremely pricey for a rebuild on a transmission I would have to assume to be quite common.

Buying a used 'box is often cheaper than rebuilding your old. I'd say you didn't get ripped off per se, but you could probably have sourced a tranny and replaced it for less.

Thanks for the responses.

It was at a dealer, but it was also sub-contracted to a transmission specialist.

So that would probably put it about $3000.00 Aus. So maybe the Dealer added their bit as-well.

The Laser is a Mazda 323 with a blue badge. Made in Japan (so i was told)

Is the car worth at least that much,a 7 year old Ford with high mileage?

If I was to sell the car Privately I could get around $9-$10 Thousand Australian.
High Mileage? Its only done 122,000 Kilometers (or 75,000 miles) that's not that much [17,500 Kms per year is close to average.)

Anyways thanks for the reply's and I shall chalk it up to experience and be a little more careful next time.

Our 84' Laser was barely upto 120k kms on the clock  Nothing major went wrong with that, although we got rid of it since it's pointless for us. I think you did get a a bit of a rip off.

If we figure out everything, the majority of the price probably was labor if it was a over night job.
