I am looking to purchase a digital camera in the near future and with so much out there, I thought it best to get the opinion of you guys first. Price range is in the region of $500 or less, preferrably closer to $400. I would also feel most comfortable buying a well known brand such as Nikon or Canon. Thanks for the help 👍

You can't go wrong with a Canon Powershot G6. Just ask Burnout. 👍

Can be had for under $500 if you shop around.

If you want something cheaper, you might want to check out the Fuji S5100.

The Canon Powershot is my first choice at the moment, I've looked at it before and it seems like a very professional camera 👍

Also, I'd like to know of what importance Optical and Digital Zoom are and how Macros come into play.

Digital zoom is completely useless. All it does is crop and inlarge the image to give a zoom effect. Optical zoom is what you want to look at. Optical zoom is regular zoom like on a SLR flim camera. By "Macros" I'm assuming you mean "macro mode." Macro mode allows you to get very close to your subject and take a photo of it.

Here is a comparison of optical/digital zoom.

and here is an example of Macro.

Thanks a lot ITR thats exactly what I was looking for 👍. I'll be heading to a local camera store later to get some more opinions, but I'm really liking the look of the G6

Saw this thread while browsing around.

Let me just say, I highly recommend the G6. The more I play with it, the more I'm impressed. Every picture comes out great.

It's got every option you could want, it feels perfect in your hand, the swivle LCD is awesome... I can't think of much to complain about.

If you have any questions about it at all, just ask. I'll be glad to tell you, try the camera to figure out an answer to your questions, whatever you'd like to know. 👍

I've narrowed it down to 2 choices now, the Canon Powershot G6 and the Canon Powershot S2 IS.

The G6 has the incredible 7.1 MP going for it but on the other hand, the S2 IS is cheaper and has 12x zoom and better video capabilities.

I guess at this point my dilemma is whether the 2 extra megapixels on the G6 are worth sacrificing the zoom and price of the S2 IS. Could I really be able to see much difference?

I think the G6 is geared more towards a true photography enthusiast camera. If you want to try getting into photography with a real heavy dudy, near SLR quality camera, I would go with the G6. The S2 is still a photo-enthusiast camera, but less so. I have its older brother, the IS S1. Its an awesome little camera just to tote around and fire off shots/record video whenever I want. Any time I'm not going on a serious shoot and leave my Drebel at home, I take it along.
