You didn't have to touch the brakes really, and like somebody already mentioned, if you do touch the brakes it stops almost instantly. I'd prefer GT4 rally, to be honest. It felt horrible.
I agree with you on the brakes, they scream arcade physics, but the problem I have always had with "Rally Races" in GT3/4 is that they aren't real rally races, they are more like auto cross courses... but the physics are quite good so in some ways they make up for the lack of having any real rally races.
The only redeeming features were the damage/crashes. The graphics were alright, and the tracks were decent, but not enough to bring it past severely mediocre in my mind.
You’re among friends, come on, you can admit the super slow-motion replay is cool.
I hope they make something similar to WRC: Rally Evolved on the PS3.
100% agreed. I'm really hoping Evolution Studios put as much effort into their next WRC game as they have been on MotorStorm.
That said, you have to at least give DiRT credit for having a very good and realistic WRC style rally courses and timing.
DiRT's damage physics and effects on the car's performance is perhaps the best I've seen in any game, even better than F1:CE which was the previous crown holder for realistic damage modeling.
Other things I would give DiRT extra credit for would be:
- Informative & Detalied Pause Menu
- Track Info & Map
- Damage Report Info
- Timing Info
- Realistic Navigational Instructions from co-driver.
- No Invisible "Walls"
- Time Delay for getting Flipped Over after a Roll-over. (long story why I know this)

- Terminal Damage Option
- Changing Engine Noise from Engine Damage (nice touch)
- Adjustable AI Performance
- Adjustable Mechanical Damage
- Dirt build-up on Cars
- and a few other nice touches along the way
You also have to give DiRT credit for offering a wide selection of different styles of racing, courses, cars, weather, etc. And although it's a nod to the arcade community, I also liked all the odd little stats you can compile, like "Longest Distance Before Crashing", "Longest Slide", etc. Some of the stats are also quite useful, like "Number of Clean Stages".
I agree though, a much improved WRC next-gen game is much needed, but I must admit, DiRT has turned out to be a very pleasant surprise for me, and fits in nicely between ridiculous arcade style driving games and hardcore sims. 👍
