My disc drive on my laptop won't open..at all. It's supposed to shoot out a bit, just enough for me to grab it so I can pull out the rest, but now it's doing nothing. I've tried the standard button on it, but nothing. I've tried right clicking the DVD drive icon in My Computer and clicking "Eject." Nothing.

So, um..what's wrong with it? :dunce:
I think a connector may be loose as I accidentally bumped the edge of it against my shelf earlier. I hope it's not broken :nervous:

Update - I was able to stick a needle in the little hole near the eject button and I was able to pull it out, so this leads me to think that something is not giving the drive power.

Update 2 - It's showing up in Device Manager as "This device is working properly," so it must be getting power somewhere, which contradicts what I thought earlier. Ugh, I have no clue. :(

Update 3 - Okay, when I turn on the computer after shutdown, I can hear what sounds like the laser resetting itself or moving to its default position. That's the only indication of life I get from this thing, after that it just doesn't work.

Does it read any CDs/DVDs.

Sounds like the motor for the eject is dead.

Time for a new drive.

Or if under warranty get it sent for repair.

Is opening the drive the only problem or doesn't it read either?

It doesn't read or open. I have a CD in there right now and all that shows up is DVD RW Drive (E) :

That's a shame. It lasted just a month and a week. I'm still not certain it's completely dead, though. It still sounds like it works when I boot up, just not after that.

If it is not reading any CD/DVDs at POST it is dead as it can not be affected by software(Windows)

Warranty or get a replacement drive.

I guess I have no other choice at this point. I'll leave it off for a couple days..then, if nothing has been fixed, I'll just send it to Best Buy or Asus.

If you warranty is over, I wouldn't send it back to a store.. Maybe a local pc store can replace the drive within a few minutes/hours?

Back up your data first.
Good idea.

I'm still in warranty thankfully. The problem is, there aren't any PC stores around here that I know of, other than Radioshack, and I don't know if they do repairs.

Replacing a laptop optical drive is usually pretty simple.

Most times there is one screw towards the bottom middle of the laptop that secures the optical in place.

However, one thing to remember is that most laptops don't use a standard flat bezel for the cover of the optical, it's always something curved/colored or what not. That bezel cover will use snap off your existing one and can be placed onto your new one.
