Do corporations truly regard you as humans, or will they let you burn in the fire?

Ok, so at 11:45am this morning at work, the Fire Alarm goes off. I am practically at the emergency exit door and then all the managers are yelling for everyone to come back. What is that BS? I mean, what if the building is burning on the other side? Are you truly a number in regards to the Corporation?

I don't know about the US, but here they make plans for larger houses like schools, offices etc. on how to get out of the house quick, even if the emergency exit is on the other side of the house. Long story short: Don't worry. And if you do, sue their asses. *lol*

I work for a large corporation, and we've had a number of fire alarms (some false, some not) in this building. Our managers came around and made everybody leave the building, whether we wanted to or not.

Let me get this straight; A false alarm or no your are out of the place.

This brings me to my point. Is it a voilation to not evacuate during any type of alarm?

I'd think it is illegal to usurp a fire alarm unless you are a fire fighter or fire marshal. Just the sort of thing I'd make a stink about. But not to the manager maggots. Call the fire marshal and tell them about it.

What kind of repercussions would occur from that? I mean, would my job be on the line for that? The reason why I am asking is that we already have been warned by the fire department that they are going to start to penalize us for the use of it. . .

If your at work and your told not to leave when a fire alarm goes off by your boss, he is braking the law and if you wanted and had proof h stopped you leaving you could sue the company for compensation. I don't know how much you'd get but you could argue he put you in a potentially life threatening situation so you might get quite a bit.

Also if you lost your job over leaving during a fire alarm you could sue but again you'd need proof. But I don't see why you would lose your job.

Retirement would be nice. . . Imagine retired at 25 big enough of a settlement, who wants to go on a cruise? I'll cover it. . .

Fire makes children cry, and must be eliminated.

As must Oprah Winfrey.

Corporations don't let people burn in fires or steal their pensions or break strikes or anything like that. PEOPLE do. A Corporation is just a bunch of people.

That being said, unless a false alarm is regular occurance in your workplace, there's no reason a manager should ask people to remain at their desks. It IS illegal. OSHA standards are very clear on this. They are open to hefty fines for non compliance.

Take it up with them. Don't worry: If they discipline you, you get to have a grand ole' time taking their happy asses to court.

Well, I wouldn't get carried away. A hypothetical case like this would take YEARS to finish, when you count the number of appeals that can be filed. Don't bank on it or anything.

color = red -> There goes my conspiracy theory on the Man, Corporation and the meaning of life equalling 42. I do agree with that, it just was a better eye catcher using a title to a thread like that. I do believe Corporations are ran through greed, which leads me to my bad view towards them. They do however supply a great deal of help in the Full Spectrum of Life.

color = brown -> False alarms are not a regular occurence, actually in my time here we never had a fire alarm until last week. Now in two weeks two fire alarms and this occurred with basically the Man telling us to stay put. Sounds to me like another WTC incident. The "What If" is burning in my head. . . OSHA, I have heard of them before but never really looked into them.

color = black -> So where do you want to cruise too?

Of course they are run through greed. So is everything else. You don't exactly jump out of bed in the morning and spend your day talking to morons out of the kindness of your heart, do you? :p

Perhaps they had a problem with the alarm system and a repair crew was simply testing it. Happens at my building from time to time. Except I tell people: "don't worry, ADT is just testing it," rather than a cryptic "stay where you are, everything is okay."

Yes, I love waking up on Mondays and going straight to a 10 hour shift hungover  [/brain washed Employee]

They are normally good on tests in our building. I must admit, our knowledge of things happening to this business on a daily basis is extremely top notch. We would have gotten the memo on that TPS report. I do agree the handling of the situation was mis-approipiate. I don't know if anything can be done about that. I am "friends" with the Vice president of the two buildings here so I will discuss with him about the "Handling" issue.

M [/B][/QUOTE] No False Expectations, I truly don't believe in a lawsuit for something like this. If I was injured or put in a life threatening postion thaT I can see - ie fire trapping me in the building, then I would go to that extreme. Grand caymans huh? As long asyou also come and watch Kristen's show : )

I've been told by fire marshals that it's a state law (providing it's a planned fire drill, or real emergency) to evacuate the buliding, and stay an appropriate distance away.

False alram or no, I take it seriously. It's a felony to pull a prank; even yelling "FIRE!" is unlawful (certain things are not protected by the right to free speech).

Back when I was in high school, it was a brand new building, with all the typical flaws of cut-rate, lowest-bidder construcution. Of course, the fire system went off for no reason; alarms lasting anywhere from 2 seconds to 10 minutes. It was such a running joke that when a real emergency came one day (a bomb threat), a few of us got up, but an administrator warned us to ignore the siren, as usual. Well, about 30 seconds later, they warned us this was indeed an emergency...certainly not a laughing matter nowadays.

In any case, I think of those poor people in the second tower WTC who were told to come back to work after the first buliding was hit...an emergency usually happen every day, thus it's something to be taken very seriously.

**** the Corporation if they believe otherwise; Coporations are quick to make settlements and apologies after the fact. You still have the responsibility to look after yourself, a corporation basically has little to do with your personal wants and needs beyond the law.

As pertaining to corporations being a group of people ... my dad says to me yesterday "Large crowds, distance, and whiskey have something in common. They make people feel invincable." A corporation is a large crowd. Perhaps the little guys should fight back by picking on members of a corporation. Draw them out into the spot light and point out everything they're doing wrong. And do it on a daily basis. If a fire alarm goes off and your manager insists that you stay at your desk, tell someone (someone that can do something about it).

Yes, the little guys should fight back. They should band together for the common good, not for only some people, but for everyone else. After all there, is strength in numbers and ...oh wait... this sounds conspicuously like a crowd to me.

I need to find the regulations in our state. I just really think it is messed up that this issue was treated in the manner and repsect it was treated in. Interesting enough, it amazes me the amount of people that actually listened to the manager, All but three of us. They cornered us outside and questioned why we left. Before we could really answer, work got slammed. They will be talking to us later over this.

Well, that is another thing that got in my head. The whole unmentionable incident. Any emergency false or real should be respected 110% regardless of the actions and reactions that would occur. That is my whole big piss-fit about it.

Manipulation of the corporation. . . I like that.

Telling someone is a good idea, but it is all based on the issue. Yes the little man should fight back, but pick and choose your battles very carefully. . .

It truly isn't, they are amazing with their shows : )

We have had fire drills here, and a building wide drill is planned soon (evacuating 9000 people into the center of a busy, crime-ridden CBD 👍 )

Although we have been told to "Evacuate to the nearest fire exit immediately" we have also been told to "lock away valuables and confidential documents, time permitting"

Yea, the building is on fire and I am gonna stick around and lock important stuff in plastic cupboards 👎
