Hello to all Gtplaneters,

I have a query some members may be able to help me with.

I've recently rediscovered the GT series, so Im currently playing PS2/GT4 on the TV in lounge room, but i live in a share house so i wanna move the PS2 into my bedroom but i only have a PC in there.
My monitor is an old CRT 17', which i've though about replacing with a flat screen for a while to save some room, but anything i bought would have to be a PC monitor and also be able to have a PS2 played on it (pref without the PC having to be on at the same time).
So do i get a tv with PC ability or a monitor with AV inputs,
I'd want at least as big a screen as my CRT, it doesnt have to be super high quality it just has to work and be reasonable to look at.
With GT5 on its way, the ability to to also work with a PS3 will prob soon be necessary aswell.
My budget is as low as possible but pref no more than $400 (Aus).

Any ideas / opinions

ps i hope this is the right forum for this sort of thing.

Cheers.

This is quite a difficult question since a lot of TVs have no or bad PC options, while PC monitors hardly have any PS2 options.

The only option I see is a HD tv with HDMI inputs, but I don't know if that fits your budget (don't know the value of AUS$)

Probably about €200.

Dunno, I think that any display with hdmi input will do. At the place where I live, they price starts at ~ 200 $/100 Ls, although the great models cost about 130 Ls/ 260 $.

thanks for posts everyone

So a TV might be the best (only?) way to go.

Sorry to be noobish, but is the ps2 hdmi compatible, i dont know anything about HDMI. Im currently running the ps2 with av cables(red, white, yellow), and my tele (like my monitor) is an old crt with set top box.

I would recommend buying a Full HD TV. Firstly GT4 supports 1080i and GT5 supports 1080p so your Full HD TV will be able to render that. And you can watch TV. Most TV's these days have a port to connect your PC to.

I don't think GT4 supported 1080i outside of America.

At 32" or less, FullHD won't matter one cent. Heck, I would argue that FullHD doesn't matter at 50" but that's a whole other argument.

Your probably best at looking for a LCD TV, you should be able to find a 19" for around 400 AUD if you shop around, a 22" for a little more if you can stretch the wallet a bit. You should certainly head out and check out Christmas deals and squeeze retailers for a good cash price.

Most decent LCD TV's at that size have both HDMI (for PS3) and a PC connector, along with the usual TV inputs for PS2/DVD etc. They will be HD Ready TV's but will be able to accept and display resolutions up to and including 1080p.

Update for anyone following this.
I ended up getting a Palsonic 19' Lcd TV/monitor for $336 AUD (harvey norman)
so far so good, getting used to the widescreen with the pc and GT4 looks and feels a little different (again prob just widescreen so ill get used to it). gonna get some some bunny ears antanae (is that what their called) so that tv will work aswell.

thanks for all advice everyone.

Congrats but that is a little on the steep side. I suppose you pay extra for TV :/.

I had this issue a while ago. I made the 'mistake' of playing my PS3 on an HDTV and knew I'd have to get an HD-compatible monitor or TV, but being a student I couldn't really justify an HDTV to myself, especially as I already wanted a second monitor for my desktop (who doesn't?) and read that the Samsung Syncmaster 226BW was quite good. £200 later I had one, £200 after that I replaced my original (and ancient) Apple Studio Display with a second one a year later. Ok, so it stretches 1080p, doesn't do 1080i and crops 720p but it was cheaper than buying an HDTV. I have mine set to 720p because the DVI switch box I have isn't dual link so it goes 'fuzzy' every now and then and the whole circles not being circles thing was getting a bit annoying, but now the on screen displays for basically any game go off the screen, GT being one of them...

Still, act like a cheap, er, person and you can expect the, er, dirtiest portion.

I was also wondering about this. I was thinking of giving my small 20" HDTV to my nephew & buying a new monitor to use for my lap top & potentially as a PS3 monitor. Are you saying that any monitor has format disadvantages compared to a small HDTV?

(I wouldn't be using it for PS2 at all)

There is really no reason you can't use a TV for the laptop screen. Most (all?) new TV's have a 15 pin monitor connection, which your laptop should have. One thing you'll want to check out is what resolutions your laptop can output in comparison to what the TV can input.

My laptop is a current generation 15" 2.8 GHZ MacBook Pro. The reason to buy a new monitor is partly to have a sleeker, more compact design for computer use, & partly to give my nephew an HDTV for him to use with his PS3. I would probably hook up the lap top to my 37" HDTV (+ Playseat/G25) to play PC driving games.
