do i need a tune up?

back when i got my auto '97 240sx (with 67k miles) it would run the freeway 80mph @3000rpms.

now im at 84k miles, and 3000rpms is achieved at 70-75mph (70 most of the time).

anybody know the problem? should i get a tune up? should i get my engine build/forged :dopey:? should i change my oil to moble 1 (use quaker state and change every 2,500-3,000 miles). im thinking i should also flush my auto fluids and get new ones.

any ideas? 💡
 
Well i would just try a full service of the car first of all - wont cost much if done by yourself, heres a few things to try.

Injector cleaner
Fuel Filter
Air Filter
Oil & Filter Change! (yeah mobil 1 is good)
Could change the fluids if desired but not necessary just top up and maintain.

I couldn't pin-point the problem but its a strange one - Engine Management light isnt on is it?

Why do you need to be so cheeky? A Honda engine would at least be more reliable than that pile of junk!

Also thought i'd mention i've grew up around my Dad being a mechanic and learned alot and could give you advice (that you asked for!) but since i dont own one i'm obviously not good enough to do so :indiff:

Oh also because i like honda im obviously a ricer and dont deserve the time of day!
 
the car is plenty reliable, and wouldnt trade it for a common as hell civicintegrapreludersx.

its much better than anything you own barrly85, much less drive.

its not really a problem, im just wondering why the rpms are like hondas (high rpms at moderate speeds)
 
If you are in the same gear at the same RPM's the speed should be the same reguardless of the engine tune. Its all gearing.

Have you switched different size tyres or rims? Have you changed differentials or transmissions? Is your speedo still correct? have you replaced transmission oil lately (and yes you should flush and replace it)? Or as Skip said is your torque converter causing this?
 
it probably does need a flush, im thinking of totally restoring the car (has 2 scratches on the front from debris), replacing strut boots, new steering rack, and possibly an lsd from a '95-'96 infiniti j30, and 5 speed, then sell it when fast and furious drifting comes out. hahaa :)

Well since you hate honda's i'll just say yes i do own a Civic and yes it is better than your car (maybe not as fast and maybe not rear wheel but yes 'oh yes' much better! obviously!

And excuse me (high rpms at moderate speeds??? my civic does 80mph @ 3000rpm! - you dont even know what your on about!!!

if you dont believe me i'll take a video of my car doing presicely that and one of it doing 130mph @ 5500rpm in 5th gear! i thank you :dopey:

start a poll on which is better more people will vote for the 240, civic is just a fricken civic, common as hell and ugly. sorry :(

3k @ 80mph is pretty high to MY standards, im used to 2500-2700 rpms @ 80mph.

and nobody cares about your civic, kthx

2: barrly85 is a well known honda fanboy, who considers civics sports cars.
3: only honda i like is the nsx
4: ahha your 240 is probably worth half of mine, but nt 👎
5: got a hell of a deal for this auto, so to me it doesnt matter
