I currently have the router/modem plugged into the power for the TV and at night or when out at work it's off completely, but when I hit the hay at night sometimes I need it on like for example now typing this on the iPad while in bed.

I can move the power over to another socket so it's on 24/7 but I'm not sure if this is a good idea. And what better way to figure it out but ask the guys on GTP to see what others do.

So I pose the question 24/7 of on/off?

My router and modem are on 24/7 as the family uses them during the day and my TiVo's download guide data every night. So far I've had no issues with them on all the time.

Short of power consumption, is there any reason you want them off?

A router don't really take that much electricity to run so I think it's fine to run it 24/7. If you are really big on saving money on your bill then what I could suggest is some sort of a on/off plug that you can attach to your wall socket. That way you could just flip a switch to get your wireless.

EDIT: I use my router and modem 24/7 and at times I might run a computer for 1-3 days straight. I have noticed that my speed slows down once a month but that is nothing to be bothered with.

It's nothing to do with power consumption and more to do with just how ive always had it. I have two wall sockets behind the tv in the lounge and one is used by a 5 gang surge protector with TV, PS3, HD BOX and router/modem. The other socket has the phone and PVR in a multi socket. The later is left on 24/7 but the other goes on and off when we need the use of either item, I was just wandering if switching the router onto the socket that's always on would be a good thing for then I'm free to use none plugged in items to surf the net without having allot of things stuck in standby.

Plus having to go down to turn it off when I have done is a pain.

I sometimes reboot my router, but thats about it. It is always on though because of the weird hours I am awake and that I'm usually downloading at night.

I leave the router on 24/7. As for my computer:

09:12:54 up 57 days, 13:50, 3 users, load average: 0.26, 0.30, 0.22

Well after getting some views fro you guys I have moved over the router/modem to an always on socket. I will see how things pan out.
