I searched GT Planet and found very few posts about people who actually use the in-game data logger. I think this one of the best features of the game, especially if you're into making yourself a better racer or trying to figure out how the aliens on the top of the time sheets go so fast.

Do you use the in-game data logger?

For those who may not know how to use the in-game data logger (not the real life GT5 data logger). Here are some simple instructions for giving it a try.

First, you must have two Best Lap Replay's saved in your Replay Theatre. Obviously, both replays must be on the same circuit.
Click on one of the replays and then click on the button with the little squiggly line in a square box. That will load your primary replay. From there, click on the 'Load' button to add your secondary, reference replay then press play and both will run simultaneously.

I'm actually planning on using this GT5 data logger:

I forgot there are two data loggers. If I had time on a real track I'd find the real life data logger fun to use. I'll be interested to see your video.

I'll re-phrase the question...

Do you use the in-game data logger?

I love the feature for reviewing the differences in lap times, but, eventually you reach a point where the "driving feel" is more important than reviewing it. It's a really great tool for learners.

I personally don't use it.

I'm a driver that uses feel which makes it really quite hard for me to describe things to people about tuning and the like =/ but I live and deal

I think it's awesome that the data is there, but frankly I don't find any use for it.

I know how long I should be taking to get through a track in any given car with any given set up just from driving it, especially since I do all my tuning on Trial Mountain initially so my familiarity with the track makes the data even more null and void.
It may not be as precise as looking at numbers but I find it more enjoyable 👍

The point I'm trying to make is that beginners can use it to find "errors" in their driving. Sure, you're talented at Trial Mountain, but, if went to the Nürburgring, all of a sudden you can see if you make small errors in your inputs (accelerating before the apex, braking too hard,) and that's what it's there for.

I don't mean to argue, but, you say you don't see a purpose, so I'm pointing it out.

Some learn from studying, others from doing. One is no better/more correct than the other.

I use it for learning a line. I like to see where I was either to hard on the gas or too hard on the brakes. I like to see smooth lines. I don't use it often, but I *do* use it when I'm trying to find out if I'm smooth enough around certain corners. It comes in handy when learning or mastering, throttle and brake control.

Interesting discussion. I'm glad I posed the question and as you stated, there is no right or wrong and everyone has a different driving style so comparisons are not always appropriate.

I hope this thread maintains a sense of diplomacy and not delve into a debate of better/ more correct, etc.

I also use the data logger to look at how I am getting on/off the brakes and gas. Also, I find it a great way to learn new circuits. The Bathurst 12 Hour is almost over and is a thrilling race. I'll certainly use the data logger once we get Bathurst in the game to see how those faster than I are navigating around the circuit.

I have always used the Data Logger its very useful.

I never claimed that there was no purpose to the data logger

My post was not aimed at you, nor anybody else.
It was directly answering the question the OP proposed, that being "Do you use the data logger"

I answered the question, before giving some insight as to why I don't use it.

I appreciate that you put the effort in to try and help me see a use for the data logger, however the thing is I already do see the use for it. For other people.
But regardless of how useful it could be for some people, I don't drive using numbers and data, I use the feel of the car to work out my mistakes, where I'm pushing too hard, where I can push harder and what I can do to the cars set up to improve its performance.

Oh, and I would like to say that just because I specialise at driving on Trial Mountain, that doesn't mean I'm weak at tracks such as the Nurburgring.

Trial Mountain is merely my home course where I go to relax and tune.

Really?

The way you say that almost implied that there was no purpose for it. It's all in the wording, Urie.

The key word there is "I"

"I" refers to my personal feeling of something.

For example: "I really don't think custard tastes nice"*

That's not claiming that custard tastes horrible for everybody ever, just that I don't like it.

*I absolutely love custard, I just couldn't think of another example for no obvious reason

I see. So, no one would hate me for saying that I don't like Corvettes? Because I said "I?" Interesting theory, I think the world still complains when others don't like the same things. Too bad, I guess, because I like the Data Logger, and expect people will argue saying "no, you shouldn't like that."

Precisely.

Some people may try and convince you otherwise if you said that because they feel so strongly otherwise. But it's your OPINION, you don't need to disclaim it as such.
People will often not particularly like it when somebody feels a way that strongly contradicts their own, it's human nature. Some people just ignore it easier than others.

Saying "I feel", "I think" "I doubt" is expressing an opinion based on your own feelings on the subject at hand.

I suppose I should clarify then if you're still confused;

I think the data logger is an amazing tool, having that data so readily available to people is a great thing and I think it's awesome that it is in the game.

However, I personally find no use for it.
I perfect my driving ability and my cars by pushing them to their outer limits and seeing where both I and my car need work.

I find this method to be the most effective and suits me better than looking at data.

+1 ^^

I drift a lot so I just push myself and the car to the limit and I make adjustments if needed.

Never heard of the data logger before. But apparently there is a trophy for using the Data Logger?

Give it a try in Practice Mode and see if it's for you 👍
