I am a very big fan of documentaries and I was wondering how other GTPers felt about this genre of film. I am interested in hearing opinions concerning certain documentaries and am hoping for suggestions so I can go hunting for the ones I am unaware of.

As I am the starter of this thread I guess I should add my thoughts.

Amandla is a very well done, and powerful, documentary concerning South Africans' use of music as a way of personal liberation during the apartheid years. I found it very moving and would recommend it to anyone.

Let's here your thoughts!

I really Like Wildlife documentaries, but only the ones done by the BBC and Sir David Attenborough. I find that other documentaries tend to over do stuff, and keep repeating things over and over again, and treat the viewers like total thick heads. Im also into documentaries that are about Space and Weather.

one series that has been really good, was the Tribe series. Bruce Parry is a great documantary maker, and I cant wait for Tribe to come back on.

While I rarely go out and rent a documentary on DVD, I love it, when I come across one on OPB(Oregon PBS). I learn something everytime I watch a documentary. I couldn't say that about 99% of the movies I watch, though I did learn that you have to shoot zombies in the head. :sly:

I like documentaries about the solar system, war, wild life, weather, history of different countries like Egypt, Rome and England! Was looking forward to seeing the one about the Kursk, but missed it!

Documentaries are really interesting and have lots of information, its amazing all the stuff you can learn!

I like almost every type of documentary.

Except the one that has as a title "Farenheit 9/11"....

Ciao!

I like documentaries, unless the film in question clearly has the film-maker's agenda in mind (Farenheit, Inconvenient Truth). I want to watch a documentary, and form my own opinions, thank you very much.

agreed, I like it when the documentary only supplies fact, and not opinion. "Farenheit 9/11" was a truly dull film, and to be honest I can never take PM seriously anyway.

i'm not really into documentaries, but i watch them every once in awhile. Touching the Void is a good one.

Automotive documentaries are by far the most interesting to me, but there are a few other ones that are quite good. Although I am not a fan of Mr. Moore's work, his films "Bowling for Columbine" and "The Big One" were indeed quite good, IMO. Of course his best film is indeed "Canadian Bacon" but that is for a different thread...

Other interesting films?

The "Aristocrats" is a quasi-documentary that I enjoyed very much, and "Spellbound" was interesting as well...

"Planet Earth" by the BBC has got to be the best documentary I have seen so far, stunning filming and locations and some true rare moments.

Best of all its due to start again anytime soon

Was that hosted by Alan Titchmarsh? It's on BBC three all the time. I try watch it everytime it's on.

I don't like them in general. Most always they're heavily biased and don't alway expose the truth or the entire story. In other words, they aren't balanced and tend to lean to one particular side of the story.

The last one I watched was about a homeless person who "finds" $100,000 in a brief case. It sucked.

Blue Planet - Deep Sea.

Best documentary ever. Does anybody happen to have any other docos about deep sea life?

I like most documentaries, and do like watching one or two every once in a while. The problem is they can very interesting, or incredibly boring, with seemingly little middle-ground.
Do mockumentaries count?

Personal favorite doc is
