Hey, I was just about to go out to buy a new iPod charger, when my parents told me that they mistakenly put my iPod through the wash.

Now, I don't want to go out to buy a charger, try it, go back, return the charger and get a whole new iPod whithout knowing if it will work in the first place!

Any help much appreciated.

A tad confused.

Is this a proper iPod, not one of the Nano/Shuffle ones?

Are you saying the iPod won't turn on at all, so you need to charge it up with a new charger because your old one doesn't work (or something)?

Have you tried to charge it up through a USB cable connected to a PC? Because the iPod charges when it's plugged in.

As a general rule, electronics + washing machines don't really go together.

In other words your iPod is ****ed.

Was the washer set to delicates or colors?

I really do not think this is the sorta thing you can get a solid answer for on here Monte Carlo. Lets say someone else has put their iPod through a spin cycle.... there's nothing saying that their's took the exact same abuse as yours did - the outcomes may or may not be the same.

I mean, my guess would be that the iPod is wrecked, but if the majority feels that way are you gonna just chuck it out and buy a new one? I doubt it. You're gonna check first to see your old one still works, regardless of what we think. So why not start off by doing that and figure out the answer yourself in this case.

So you ruined you iPod charger and you went out to buy a new one. By the time you got back your parents told you it was wrecked because you were so stupid enough to put into the washer, is that correct?

Buy an Apple iPod, best thing on the market, don't buy the Zune from Microsoft, it's the biggest crap ever made. You're even better off with a usual MP3 player then a Zune...

Wether it'll work depends on how long it has been in the wash. Electronic stuff and water don't like eachother so it'll be likely your iPod is screwed...

It depends on a few things to be certain. First of all, if it was an iPod mini, it's chances of survival are much higher (flash based vs hard drive based). Secondly, was the iPod carrying a charge at the time of its.. Cleaning? If no, then it's chances of survival are also higher than if it had a charge (no charge = nothing to short out the electronics inside).

Opinion? It was a mini and didn't have much charge, I'd say dry it and it'll probably work. If it was a hard drive based model, try drying it and seeing if it works, but the water could've gotten in the hard drive.

Regular iPods and iPod Minis are HDD based, the Shuffles and Nanos are flash based.

And iPods are easy to open if you know how Ultrashot.

Yep.

As said, I seriously doubt anything electrical would survive an hour getting bashed around in a washing machine... But you never know.

It still boggles my mind this happens... but anyway, yeah... Don't turn it on (if you haven't already) and leave it for a week in a sunny area or under a light. Let the water evaporate and hopefully it will work.

Precisely. We had flood damaged computers that we let dry out and worked fine. Hopefully the same will be true for you.

If it was simply water, then you could let it dry out. However, the iPod was exposed to chemicals while in the washer.

BTW, was the iPod Mini flash or HDD-based? I always thought they had a hard disk, but I decided to check Wikipedia (since I couldn't find the official Mini tech specs) and it states:

Compact Flash Microdrive hard drive

So, anyone want to clear this up?

if it's hard-drive based, I'd say that it's less likely for it to have survived. Hard drive + impact = shattered platters :scared: definitely not something that you can just go out and repair, unfortunately. I'd agree with the other posts to let it dry out for at least a week, though, and hope that it starts up then.

Edit: a Compact Flash Microdrive hard drive would mean, to me at least, that the hard drive is actually based on Flash technology, instead of being a magnetic hard disk drive.

Good point. If the iPod did in fact suffer through the whole wash, then the dry-cycle surely did some damage.

I'd let it dry out also for a while and instead of buying a new charger to find out it's knackered just find someone .. friend / family / neighbour etc .. with an ipod and charger and get them to charge it for you and then you will know if it's dead without having to spend any money 👍

I like the put it in the tumble dryer gag 👍 ... If only eh ;)

when my parents told me that they mistakenly put my iPod through the wash.
How the hell would your parents "mistakenly" put your iPod in the washer? Seriously. That question alone deserves a separate thread.

Well, to be fair, my mom's cell phone was dropped in my grandparents' toilet, and it survived. Not to mention several of my Nintendo DS cartridges went through the whole washing/drying cycle without a problem at all. Then again, they are cartridges...

But yeah, your iPod is probably screwed. Try DWA's tips, you might have some hope left.

Dont touch it for a day or two(like dont turn the power on) and leave it on a radiator, it might be ok. Doubt it though.

A radiator would be way too hot. Just leave it out on a desk with a small fan blowing on it and let the moving air do its job.
