This great competition (maybe the most important and harder in the world of motor) starts today, and you can follow the race through their official site:

 Rally

It's worth following it just to hear Robby Gordon throw his temper tantrums.
That guy is an idiot but the rest of the rally is brilliant, should be a good battle this year between the Mini's (Peterhansel and Al-Attiyah) and Sainz's SMG. Maybe De Villiers' Hilux can challenge too.

Trucks should be fun to watch, De Rooy vs Kamaz again. Bikes will be Coma and Despres as usual but with Despres on a Yamaha instead of KTM.

Looking forward to the first stage tomorrow :)

@Carbonox There still is a rally which goes to Dakar in Senegal called the Africa Eco Race, I think they're on stage 4 at the moment and Jean-Louis Schlesser is probably leading as usual. As for why the south American rally is called the Dakar I can only guess it's for its heritage and more important marketability.

Wow, it's come around again already!

I'll be watching avidly, as I have done as long as I can remember. Some of my earliest recollections involve watching Mitsubishis, Gauloises-liveried Buggies and the Nissans in the early to mid 2000's. Along with Le Mans, Indianpolis, the Monaco Grand Prix and the Isle of Man TT (as well as many other events depending on which motorsports you follow), Dakar is one of those events that really jumps out at you in the calendar; it's one of those we all want to see, and one of those every competitor wants to win.

The Dakar has started! The bikes are into the special stage. Now does anyone want to put any bets on which stage Robby Gordon and his whiny toddler face will lose their first hour?

E- First stage of the rally and Robby Gordon hasn't started at his scheduled time, he could have broken down before the special has even started.

It's funny the hate for Gordon, I am a fan of his just because regardless of his whining, the guy can flat out wheel a race vehicle. The new truck looks pretty darn cool compared to the Hummer and it looks like an oversized toy to a degree, but I'm curious to see how well it will be with the smaller footprint in all areas with big rubber.

We have 2 pretty good racers this year too. I suspect BJ Baldwin though will possibly finish outside the top 10.

Too late to play my little game now, predictably Robby Gordon has finished the first stage 2 hours and 8 minutes behind Carlos Sousa and his Great Wall Haval.

I love it. The race is full of top names like Marc Coma (bikes) and Stephanne Peterhansel, Ginel De Villiers and Carlos Sainz (cars). I love the cars and all three compete for different teams. Peterhansel for X-Raid, Ginel for Imperial Toyota and Sainz for SMG-Red Bull. I also think Sousa (Haval) and X-Raid drivers Orlando Terranova, Nasser-Al-Attiyah and Krzstof Holowczyc could be decent.

I see WTCC driver Tom Coronel has a brother, called Tim Coronel.. and he's in the Dakar..

Also... as my avatar suggests, I'm happy with the way the Dakar is going at the moment :) BMW POWER :D

Two things I'm curious about. First, did VW pull out of Dakar? I see Red Bull on the Sainz buggy. Second, are the Hilux pickups in the "car" class? I also see Robby is using the Hummer still, I wonder if he'll change that anytime soon.

Actually, one more question. Why don't the US truck builders like Mack, Peterbuilt, and Freightliner build trucks for this?

1. Yes Volkswagen pulled out of the Dakar after 2011
2. Yes, there are 4 classes: Bike, Quad, Car and Truck
3. I guess they don't feel they need to, I've never been to America but I'd imagine that more of the roads are paved than in some of the countries where Kamaz sell their trucks (more relevant marketing).

Dakar

I don't watch it live, but I do watch the race summaries. Probably my favourite rally event of the year :)

OK. As an American, I am uneducated on most of the practices beyond the borders, so I apologize for my ignorance here, but why is it that the European companies have "multi-year programmes" for racing, rally and rally-based especially? I don't understand why they run for 3-5 years then pull out?
