The Audi R8 LMS racing simulator will be unveiled at the gamescom fair this Wednesday in Cologne. It is designed to simulate the racetrack experience in simulation games such as Gran Turismo 5 on the Sony PlayStation. German racing driver Christopher Mies will present the Audi R8 LMS racing simulator, which was developed by Sony and Audi and which has been custom-built by quattro GmbH. Some of Mies’s wins in the R8 LMS include the GT3 European Championship and the Bathurst 12 Hour race (Australia).

So it simulates simulation games. What the heck does that mean?

I think it's trying to "simulate" better than GT5, via have a more realistic experience like g-forces responses. But I think it was just a misunderstanding error. By the way, was that excerpt cut from an article?

Interesting quote from this particular article:

"This year Audi will bring the World premiere of the Audi R8 LMS racing simulator to GT5 on the PS3. Long time Audi R8 LMS driver, Christopher Mies will present it this Wednesday."

So apparently, GT5 is getting new DLC tomorrow?

That's what my thought was.

It almost makes it sound like some sort of "super premium" DLC car.

oooh that would be nice :scared:

I wouldn't read too much in to it.

It just sounds like Audi will have a kiosk at Gamescom running a version of GT5 that just features Audi cars. It's been done before with previous GT titles.

"The company says it is designed to simulate the racetrack experience in games such as Gran Turismo 5 on the Sony PlayStation."

so basically it's one of those moving simulators that's just hooked up to run GT5.

nothing to see here people, move along

I wonder if they know they won't have a cockpit view since this car is not modeled with one.

You know I've been wondering, visual quality-wise are the R8LMs standards just premium models without the cockpit view or are they ugly like all the GT4 carry-over standards?

Sounds like some fancy new hardware to me.

The LMS cars certainly have finer quality than the GT4 Standards, but they are still modelled the same way as those; as one-piece models, with textured panel gaps, unlike the Premiums, which are multi-piece.

The XFR is much the same - higher quality than the average Standard, but still, well, Standard :)

^ What he said.

I thought Audi was getting cozy with Forza, like how Nissan is cozy with GT?

With Forza, it's more like throwing out names. Anything that will bring attention to the game. Like last game it was Michelin who T10 claimed they got the tire modeling from and now it's Pirelli.

As to Audi and GT5- I remember a video posted on Audi TV a few years ago (prior to GT5 release) comparing real life and virtual driving of the R8 (the production v8 version) on the Nordschleife. Here's another report from regarding the simulator:

"This Thursday, gamescon 2011 opens up to the public in Cologne, Germany. This year Audi will bring the World premiere of the Audi R8 LMS racing simulator to GT5 on the PS3. Long time Audi R8 LMS driver, Christopher Mies will present it this Wednesday."

As to the OP- I think it's a true simulator- actuator (motion feedback) and all using GT5 physics engine and version of the Nurburgring but made specifically for and with Audi. In the past PD has made one for Subaru using GT4 as the base model:
