I just got my Japanese copy from ebay yesterday. I'm not having any luck with the updates. It might be because I have a slow DSL connection, or because I'm using a wireless connection. Whatever the case is, I don't have the time and/or patience to wast any more on the updates.

Anyway, I would like to try a US copy of the game to see if it works.
