I have always ( if i had a dog at the time ) had either a pitbull or a boxer, i just like these two breeds. I bought my daughter a boxer pup for her birthday about 1 month ago and it was eventually going to be a fully inside pet. We had been going back and forth with her being inside and outside depending on how much sleep if any i got the previous night because its too hard to have 3 kids and a puppy that you have to watch all the time to house break it. She was only 8 weeks old so i put a spike in the ground and put a leash on her and hitched her to the spike. There was enough length for her to come up on my porch to eat and get out of the sun and enough to run and play. Well this morning we got up and kids went outside and fed her and all the usual and we came back in. About 20 mins later the utility meter reader knocked on my door and asked if i knew my pup was dead. Dead, i just fed her.

Went out back and what she had done was go on the portch as usual but she had wrapped the leash around and around my grill and she had either tried to jump off the porch or had fallen off the porch. Needless to say she had about 1ft of leash free and the porch is about 1 1/2ft high, so she was just hanging there off the porch when i got her :indiff:. luckily my kids were inside and busy and didn't go out there. I had not thought about this and had not had any problems the entire time she was back there. She was well taken care for so no this was not a neglect issue, i just never expected that after all the dogs ive had and done the same way. So if you have a dog in a similar situation you might want to look at everything to avoid an accident like this. Dogs come and go, but having to tell your 5 year old that someone stole her dog is not fun.

I don't know how I'll have to break the news to my kid; I have two geriatric animals (11+ years) and a senior (7), and even though they're in great health, it's not a moment I'm looking forward to.

My wife's an indoor-pet person, I'm an outdoor-pet person: So we have indoor pets.

Haha, touche'. Im more of an outdoor pet person also but i will be starting to work nights and we live in pretty much in the worst section of the city so my wife liked the idea of having a boxer in the house at night.

I never understood the point of "outdoor" pets - why have one at all if you're not willing to let it live with you? As a kid I always had dogs growing up, but they were always allowed in or out at will. Incidentally, they were usually boxers.

I am sorry for the loss of your pup, and I don't think it was neglect. But I don't currently have a dog because I don't have time to walk it several times a day, and I'm not willing to keep it in a crate or outdoors.

Thats really horribile, I feel for you and your children, and I am sorry for your loss.

If you need to put a spike in the ground then you shouldn't have that particular dog.

Did you consider telling her the truth? Sorry about your dog. That sucks man.

Well telling a 3 and 5 year old that theyre dog hung its self just didn't seem like something a child that young should hear to me.

It has nothing to do with any particular dog. Until a dog is about 3 months old i have always gone in and out with them because for me this method works well when training them not to make my house a nasty germ toilet with feces and urine. I didn't want the pup to get out from my backyard like any other pup ive had and get either stolen or hit by a car and killed. Years and years of this has never shown a problem until this happened. I was just telling everyone because its not something you really think about happening in hopes of keeping it from happening to someone else.
