Dog tumor

A friend of mine at work has this dog who had been getting very ill. They found a tumor and he decided to throw down the cash to have the dog operated on. He's a very kind, loving, caring individual. Their dogs are like family members - as well they should be because they're great dogs.

Anyway, these are pictures he took after the surgery. The first is of the dog doing what he does best, and the second one is of the tumor.

Open up the file below. It was a tumor that weighed 7 pounds and was slightly smaller than a basketball. Most big roasts you buy at the grocery store weigh less than 5 pounds. In proportion, it would be a 20 pound tumor on me. He survived the surgery and is doing well today. The jpg titled" Chase" isn't a nasty picture. It's a picture of Chase doing what he does best. If you open the "tumor" photo, those are pennies I placed on top of it to give you some idea of size.

Thats a beatiful dog. Kinda like the one that I want to get. What breed is it?
 
Chase is a big dog. He's got a big belly. But we love on our dogs and poke and prod looking for just such a thing. I noticed that his belly was really tight when I would pet him. I mean, really tight. But I'd pat him hard and poke on it and it didn't bother him so I didn't think much of it. Then he stopped eating two Sundays ago so we took him in last Friday and the doctor said to come back Monday for x-rays. When she called me Monday, she really didn't give us much hope. I truly thought I was gonna be digging a big hole in the backyard last night. Long story short, he pulled through. It was attached to his spleen and just pushed his organs out of the way and filled his abdomen as it grew so you couldn't tell by looking at him. The doctor said she was surpised we found it. Most of the time, what happens is the dog bangs into something and it ruptures and they die of internal bleeding before they can even operate. So dog owners, rub your dogs and check them out often. His last check-up was 4 months ago and this thing wasn't there then. That's how fast it grew. The doctor said she could actually tell a difference in it's size from Friday to Monday.

Tough dog though. Can you imagine something that size growing inside you in just four months? I guess women can, since that's what they do. But this is just crazy.

Look's like a Siberian(sp?) Husky.

Cute dog, very sad story, my 5 year-old Chihuahua(sp?) died of a bladder cancer a year ago. :(

poor dog. i feel bad for him, and yeah, its a siberian husky.

sUn, im sorry to hear about your chihuaua (i dont know how to spell that one, lol.). my grandma had a chiuaua, but it too passed away.

My dog had a bacterial backup for a couple years until about a year ago my mom finally decided to go get the thing out.

Yeah. I'm glad to hear the dog recovered. But i'm amazed on how big that tumor is.
 
Yeah, freaking huge tumor. I presume the dog weighed in around 35 to 40 pounds, so this thing was 1/5, or 20%, its total weight.

My god. The thing was 20% of the dogs weight. Thats...simply...just weird.
 
Just curious...The tumor looks like a plastic bag of water.. Is that whats in a tumor? I'm just curious.

Glad to hear the dog made it through.

Personally I'd save the cash spent on the operation towards a new dog.
 
My brother just had a grapefruit sized growth removed from his abdomen, and he's only 21. They had to operate on every one of his digestive organs and remove a part of his stomach. But I didn't think to get any pictures of it. Damn.

That's a very...large...tumor. I'm slightly disgusted, yet amazed a cancerous growth could actually get that big.

I thought people were nuts to spend wads of money on thier pets, but if you can afford it, then it's okay if the pet's going to live a long, happy and healthy life afterwards. My wife and I spent about $2800 on a Anterior Cruciate Ligament and bone healing operation om my dog Milo. The surgery's called a TPLO (forget what it stands for), and it's quite pricey.

However, he's walking on all fours again (except first thing after he wakes up), so I'm much happier. I just couldn't stand to hear my buddy whine in pain and limp with a cracking noise each time he walked.
