Hey chaps

Doing a clean install on my Dell M1330. Going from Vista Busines 32bit to Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit.

I have installed W7 on quite a few Laptops for friends including my own Desktop without much problems, though all were 32 bit to 32 bit and did not require a clean install.

Just before I do My Dell, is there anything I need to know, as I have heard that doing clean installs on Dell laptops can be problematic? I heard this from a friend though not sure how much truth in it?

Anyway any advice would be much appreciated.

Also, from anybodies experience does windows 7 run cooler than Vista? I am hoping it does as My Dell has the troubled 8400GS graphics card that has heating issues. I have already had it fixed under warranty as the card over heated and took the motherboard out. Since it has had a new motherboard with the latest Bios and does run a little cooler but the machine is still way too hot for my liking. Now I have moved to Italy from London and the climate being hotter does not help as the macine is running allot hotter.

Thanks

Mate i have the Windows 7 64x Ultimate and it works perfectly comparing to Vista, that sucked big time ! I friend of mine instaled it in a Pentium 3 :)👍!

Yeah, I was on XP on my Desktop since 06 and found it great. I only ended up using Vista on the Laptop as it came with it. I hated it at first but found it just ok after I tweaked it to run a little better. The laptop thankfully is quite strong, 4GB ram and a 2.6 X7800 processor so can handle Vista fine but Vista just seems such a hog and after using W7 on my Desktop, I can't wait to stick it on the Laptop for a far slicker OS Experience.

I have a quad core on 2.83 Ghz, 6GB DDR3. With Vista sometimes i had some crashes:crazy:! Now its much lighter and faster, so youll be happy when you install it:tup:! Vista was so messed up that sometimes reminded me of Windows ME (millenium):ouch:!

Jeez, most of the Laptops I installed 7 on were all entry level models with Sempron CPUS and the like, and all were dog slow on Vista. Its a shame that allot of people are not PC literate so had no Idea that just a few tweaks could have Vista running a little better on there machines. Anyway after 7 was installed, all of them were super slick vs Vista.

I have an Asus eePC thingy here, I am going to put 7 on that just to see if it is an improvement over XP. Will be interesting to see.

I still prefer Windows XP > All

Have windows 7 pro on one of my home desktops and I much prefer it from Vista but it takes up alot of HD Space and it still has the same fiddly Vista menus and such.

I would guess not, since the operating system doesn't have much to do with that.

You are probably going to have to look for drivers and store them somewhere to use them after the install.

I did a clean Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit install on my Dell Vostro 1500 recently. The only issues I ran into were finding drivers, but in the end I managed to find all the drivers I needed with a bit of searching. Runs much better with Win 7 than it did with XP Pro 32 bit lol...
The Vostro also happens to have one of those "defective" Nvidia 8400M GS cards, but I have never ran into any overheating problems with it. I assume it is because the Vostro 1500 has a decent cooling system...

Wow that was a quick install, barely 20 minuets!! Just installing updates. Looks like W7 found all of the drivers for the Machine. I thinnk that was the most swish install yet.

As for W7 running cooler...

As W7 is a light operating system vs Vista, some people have reported that W7 runs cooler than Vista. The reasons is that I guess W7 is better optimised and uses less system resources. (CPU GPU) Time will tell, I will check what my idle CPU/GPU temps in a while vs my Vista set up.

I don't play games on this Laptop but the GPU mostly idles at around 65/80 degrees depending on the room tempreature. And thats when the GPU is doing nothing!! It makes for a roasting ot laptop. if I play a 720p movie it cooks at 90+!!!

Wow, even when playing FS9 or FSX the GPU temperature never got that hot in the Vostro
Idle, the Vostro hovers around 60c or less for the GPU. Under load, maybe around 75c or so.

Did you try to see the difference with Aero off or is it already off?

You said that there was a 32 bit vista on your computer and now its going to be 64 bit... how much RAM is in your laptop?

Have not tried yet, the gf has her hands on it for now!! hehe

The laptop has 4GB of ram so should benefit from a 64bit OS.👍

I did not realise that the sound was not working on the Laptop. The MS sound driver did not work nor did the official Dell driver. There was not even a 64bit driver available for Windows 7on the Dell website, just a Vista 64 bit driver that also did not work. I ended up having to put an IDT driver from an XPS 1645 to get the sound working.
